Let's Hear it For Jonah Hex...

Brought in $5,085,000 this weekend! Just to put that in perspective, here are the weekend box office receipts followed by overall gross...
1. Toy Story 3
Gross: $109,000,000 ($109,000,000)
This almost beat Pixar's previously largest opening, Finding Nemo, by $40 million...
2. The Karate Kid
Gross: $29,000,000 ($106,254,000)
Considering this was the amount most predicted it would make in its first week, I'm sure Sony just jizzed themselves...
3. The A-Team
Gross: $13,775,000 ($49,797,000)
Huge bust...
4. Get Him to the Greek
Gross: $6,117,000 ($47,857,000)
A box office triumph...
5. Shrek Forever After
Gross: $5,520,000 ($222,977,000)
To be expected after being in theatres over a month...
6. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Gross: $5,270,000 ($80,500,000)
Likewise...
7. Killers
Gross: $5,100,000 (39,400,000)
I'm shocked this made as much as it did this weekend considering it was reviewed as poorly as it was, it made no money up to now, and word of mouth surely isn't influencing people to see it. This will likely be close to the same fate that Knight and Day, a very similar movie, will face...
8. Jonah Hex
Gross: $5,085,000 ($5,085,000)
Absolute bomb. Warner Brothers takes a huge hit with this, which was expected on some level considering they chose not to advertise it up until two weeks ago and they had to go in for major reshoots. The only silver lining is that Hex only had a $35 million budget...

I still have no idea who the hell the target audience is for Jonah Hex. It doesn't look like it'd appeal to anyone.

They should have done a "Buy One Ticket Get One Free on Opening Weekend" cross-promotion with that Red Dead Redemption video game.

don't know why you think this. it's on pace to make around the same amount as forgetting sarah marshall. i can't imagine the studio thought it would do any better than that.
i think knight and day will be much better than killers. it already has some good buzz around it and with some good reviews it will catch on. despite his best attempts to destroy himself, tom cruise is still tom cruise and will bring in crowds. i'd take my chances with him carrying a film over ashton kutcher any day..

Get Him to the Greek cost about $40mm to make, so that they've only grossed 47 right now could make it seem like a bust. But I would imagine that DVD sales and on demand rentals, etc. will make up for a lot of that.

Not a huge hit but hardly a bust as R rated comedies not named The Hangover are caped around 100 million. It also will probably make about the same as Funny People while costing half as much so I suspect they are pleased.

I'm telling you they had much bigger hopes for this movie, regardless of how other movies did.
Sure it's not too big of a hit because of the budget, but they were expecting more.

$50 million, on pace to eventually make $70-80 million on its theatrical release is a modest success for a comedy like this. They might have hoped for a bigger success, but there's no way they are taking a financial hit on this movie.

They were never going to get Hangover money and they were stupid if they were expecting it to do significantly better than it did. Furthermore, I am having trouble understanding why you think they had bigger hopes for this movie. It doesn't have any big stars in it and was the sequel of a movie that made all of 100 million. What have you been reading that says the studio was disappointed in it?

Looked it up. Budget of $40 million. The movie is already profitable and it hasn't gone to DVD yet. The movie is a modest success.

That's more or less exactly what I said. They were expecting more but aren't hurting financially.
Also, whether or not Superbad was supposed to be a Jonah Hill vehicle or not, it definitely served as one.

i don't see how making 15% on 40 million in the economy we're in could be seen as a bust.

Maybe I should change it from "bust" to "mildly disappointing."
I read somewhere that the studio was disappointed. I read a few other places that they expected to have a better opening.

That is more less exactly what I said, which is why I quoted that portion. I said nothing regarding your characterization of the movie as a success.
