Best for my fishing the grass flats and mangroves is Shimano. I own a Sahara and Sedona and both have pulled in lots of fish. Guy I fish with pretty often uses a Stradic. I'm not sure any maker can match Shimanos drag system for the money.

I've used Penn spinning reels from specs in the inshore marshes to battling tuna in the gulf and just about everything in between. Their drags are awesome and they are tough to beat IMO. Built like a tank.

I would recommend the Spinfisher V in the 3500 size for reds or the Battle in the 2000 or 2500 size for specs. If targeting larger quarry, stick with the Spinfisher V and go up in size. The drags on the Spinfisher series are super heavy duty and can put out around 20#.

Shimano and Penn

Although the Shimano Sonora is the biggest POS I've ever used.

Shimano Stradic has always been the best bang for the buck to me. Pairing it with the perfect rod is the hard part

I use the same reels for everything. When I fish salt/brackish water, I just wash them off with the hose and then clean and oil them when I get home

I own spinners built by Penn, Shimano and Quantum. They all seem to perform well for thier purpose. As far as quality is concerned you cannot beat the Quantum Cabo's for the price. They cost more than the Penn's I own (Conflict and Battle) but are higher quality components. They are less expensive than the Shimano's I own ( Thunnus and Sustain) but have a much better line capacity and similar in quality. Hope this helps

Pflueger. And it's not even close ,The president lasts forever w minimal maintenance. I've thrown away plenty of the other major brands. Best kept secret in the industry.

Shimano & Penn....especially the Shimano Stradic, have found that the Shimano quality has deteriorated over the last 3-4 years. Penn's are probably the toughest one's though they are very heavy.

Two weeks ago at the Classic Expo in Tulsa we were introduced to a number of new Daiwa's that seemed to be very well made and ridiculously light. Have about 6 coming for us to test and review. I'm thinking they are going to be great.

Watch it on the pin reels. They are now making some of them in China. Shimano has never let me down

Use to use sahara's. All garbage. Never lasted me more than a summer or two. Switches to penns and no trouble. And yes I rinsed them every trip.

Prefer shimano but you're right about the pflueger. I have one a decade old that I just can't kill.

I like my Penn's and I have a Shimano and Abu Garcia also. Both Penn and Shimano have stood up for years with a freshwater rinse after trips and yearly cleaning. Abu is about 2 years old so holding judgement. Seems to be a good reel. I love the 4600/5500/6500 casting reels. I have had good luck with them from bass tournaments to drowning shrimp at the coast.
