There has to be at least one championship every year there is only one team that went 72-10

As a Mariners fan, I'd trade the 116 win season for a World Series ring in a heartbeat.

You serious? If you could only have one I promise you every player is taking the ring. Rings are what you are remembered for. Records will probably be broken one day.

Twisted logic

Non-championship teams are simply forgotten. Does anyone care about the fact that the Mavs had a 52-5 stretch in 2007? Would anyone have remembered the 2013 Heat is not for Ray Allen's shot? Although in NBA there is a strong correlation between regular season wins and winning championships.

There is no doubt the winner of the Finals this year will be Warriors or Spurs, way better than the field.

Bet it's a resounding NO for 95% of this board. Point well taken

Because it is...

If you don't break the record by 1 or 2 wins but still win the title, you are still known as an all time great team that had 1 of the greatest seasons ever. Break the record but don't win the championship, you are known as a choke or "not as good as their record says".

If you break the wins record, you damn sure better win the title as well. If not, they will be remembered in a negative way.

See: 2007 New England Patriots. Hold the record for most wins in a single season (with a couple other teams) at 18. Lost the SB. Season is considered a failure.

Every player in pro sports would die to win a Championship.

Within team sports, championships are everything and everything else is below this mark/standard.

Because winning the championship is all that matters in the end. Winning regular season games is a means to an end

Everyone remembers 16-0 and then losing in the most important game of the season.

What do you think the Patriots players wanted? Record for most wins in a season or a SB ring?

The regular season is meaningless in basketball. It's meaningless in other sports but it's particularly meaningless in the NBA. If the regular season was so important, nobody would consider the 2001 Lakers one of the greatest teams of all-time. They only won 56 games that season. But they were so dominant in the postseason that nobody cared about their regular season record.

I'd be more inclined to call the 2000 67-15 Lakers one of the GOATs, even though their playoffs were rougher than in 2001...

Sure 16-1 in the playoffs is impressive, but the 6 months before that matters too for teams trying to enter that GOAT conversation. It's all about sample size: usually 65+ wins, high margin of victory, and a championship

winning games is a nice thing.

winning the championship is the way teams are judged.

Look at the Buffalo Bills. 4 losses in the super bowl, two on FGs hitting the upright. all they got out of it was a Congressman.

Look at the Minnesota Vikings under Fran Tarkenton. 4 times lost in the super bowl. Tarkenton rarely gets a mention in all time greats on TD.
I think Vikings did it 4 out of 5 years, quite a run. Lost them all.
