Welcome.

Find a nice looking mutt. I have a $1,000 purebred, and a stray that showed up on my doorstep. That stray is my favorite dog of all time.

Thanks. Yea, I've done so much research I feel like I am just over thinking it now. I had a dog as a kid growing up and loved it, and I now have small kids and want them to have the same experience I did.

Labs are the best dog breed. So that's what I recommend. You'd be hardpressed to find a friendlier dog at least.

Or just really anything but a pitbull

I learned recently that longer hair dogs tend to shed less than dogs with shorter hair. I guess this makes sense when I think about it.

I've also found that small dogs are arseholes in general for some reason

Small dog: Feist (aka Rat Terrier)

Medium dog: Blue Heeler (aka Australian Cattle Dog)

Both are intensely loyal if raised as puppies with your family. Heelers ARE NOT like labs though. They are independent and very smart. Not that labs aren't smart, but a quality Heeler is next level smart.

Rat Terriers are protective of kids and fearless.

My two cents.

Great dogs for a specific purpose. As a pet like OP described? Terrible choice. They are a fuzzy pumper barber shop of hair and stink within 1 day of a bath. They clear your coffee table with their tails. Other issues as well.

Yep, that ticks all of OPs boxes

They're basically it for dogs that don't shed.

Personal recommendation would be a mini Aussie. They shed, but it's the kind of hair that clumps up for easy removal, not like lab hair that sticks to everything

Would you consider adoption?

We are fostering an incredible dog now that fits your needs perfectly.

lol at Heelers being smarter than labs

Come on man. What planet do you live on?

I've also had a blue heeler nip the shite out of my ankle as a child once. So that's probably not the best choice if you have kids. Or if you're worried about it biting a neighbor and being sued.

Get a mutt, they are the best and smartest, and also don't have many expensive vet bills, due to genetic problems.

Monday, I met a mutt from Virginia, who was a mix between a Chow and a Spaniel, was very impressed by that dog, just the right disposition and smarts. Really a good looking dog too, about 35 pounds probably. Can't say the same for his owner though.

My brother owns, raises, and trains champion AKC and HRC trial labs. They are smart. But more, they're very trainable .

But he will tell you that the Heelers we have owned are just plain smarter. Not as easily trained as a lab (or even an Australian Shepherd), but smarter.

Because of their independent streak, they require different handling. Unlike a lab, you can't shock or whip them into submission and expect positive results.

Raised ours with our kids and was a great experience for all.

This surprised me too. I didn't believe it until I had lived with my girlfriend's golden for some time and we had over my cousin's yellow lab. The lab sheds about twice to three times as much as my golden.

But about the golden... my girlfriend got him from Triple L in Manny, LA and it is an excellent family pet. Loves everyone, has tons of patience, and I've never seen him show any aggression to anyone or anything (well except one cat we found in my backyard ). We keep him trimmed during the spring and summer to where he doesn't shed a ton but he still has a very soft coat.

The heelers and aussies will nip heels.. they are herders. Heelers can be a little destructive if left alone. Not a fan of labs but to each his own. Jack Russels can be great dogs if trained and have interaction.

Sorry man. That argument that "independence equals a smarter dog" sounds like when ppl try to tell me cats are smarter because they don't listen. lol

Labs are THE smartest dogs in the world. When is the last time you saw a heeler:

1)Be a seeing eye dog?
2)Be a therapy dog?
3)Sniff out fricking explosives?
4)Sniff out people trapped in snow?
5)Fetch a darn beer out of an ice chest for crying out loud?

I'll wait

I have an 8 1/2 year old Boxer who's the best dog I've ever had. He does shed, but he's so good around people you tend to look past that.

Lol no they aren't.

Top 5 according to most kennel clubs are

Border collie
Poodle
German Shepherd
Golden Retriever
Doberman

ETA: labs are somewhere around 7/8
