Check this out. They literally have a topography report for each bowling lane. And they have reports posted online for how often and by who is oiling the lanes.
I get it that these women come from all over the country for this and theres some cash to be won, but is this really taken that seriously? This takes all the fun out of just tossing the ball down the lanes and hoping the pins fall.

The daughter of one of my old contractors is a professional bowler. He was telling me she has between 20 and 30 different kinds of bowling balls that she uses depending on the oil pattern. I had no idea it was that complex.

Sat next to a guy and his wife on the flight to BR yesterday. They were coming down from Ohio so she could bowl in this tournament. He said the average score for these leagues is about 160. But shite I couldn't do much better than that

This is for every bowling center ever, they always let you know what the oil pattern is

Can't be too prestigious of a tournament if the average is around 160. There's quite a few women in my league that carry higher averages than that...and our league is more of a social league as opposed to a high stakes competitive one

No its not that complicated, and a waste of money. Between 4-6 different, yes

I bet your balls are dirty and scuffed up.

Thanks, but I'll take the professional's word over yours.

Can I get a "topography" report for each bowler? Am I right, eh fellas?

If you only bring 4-6 balls to a torunament you're a real Munson!

Bowling will always be a fun sport because it's the only sport that lets you eat and drink while you play

Oil patterns are the only way to challenge Elite level bowlers.

Higher averages mainly due to familiarity with lanes & same oil patterns.

Plus for a pro tournament they oil it differently to make it more difficult.

Just about any pro competition is taken that seriously if not much more so.
Professional chess players at the top level rent time on multi-thousand core computers to check their analysis and try out new ideas, etc. For example, Veselin Topalov used an 8000 core IBM Blue Gene supercomputer to help him prepare for his World Championship challenge to Viswanathan Anand. He still lost.
And that was in 2010, it's probably much tougher now.

I don't understand why it takes that much computing power to analyze the best move for fricking chess. The damn space shuttle supposedly had less than an Iphone and that dude is playing against an 8000 core supercomputer?? What the hell, man.
