It's almost 4 years to the date since this group defied the odds to escape a tough group. A lot changes in 4 years. Listed with their current club and age.

Goalkeepers

Tim Howard- Age 39. Colorado Rapids. In hindsight, his godlike performance against Belgium was one hell of a swan song on the world stage. He gradually declined, but none of the younger keepers were quite consistent enough to fully push him out of the #1 job until it was too late. He's arguably not even Colorado's best keeper at this point, and this will definitely be his last year.

Brad Guzan - Age 33. Atlanta United. Guzan is the starter for the best team in MLS currently, and leaving behind a dumpster fire situation at Aston Villa. He figures to play a role in the coming years, but will face stiff competition to start for the national team from Steffen.

Nick Rimando - Age 38. Real Salt Lake. This figures to be the last year for the legendary MLS keeper. He's still good for his age and ridiculous at saving penalties.

Defenders

DeAndre Yedlin - Age 24. Newcastle United. Yedlin impressed Spurs with his World Cup performance, and has since found a nice home at Newcastle. He is definitely a much improved player under Rafa Benitez, and will play a big role for the next several years for the national teams. Looks like Shaq Moore will give him competition soon.

Omar Gonzalez - Age 29. Atlas. Unfortunately for Omar, despite playing well in the Liga MX, his national team career will likely end in disgrace with a horrific own goal against T&T. Feel for the guy.

Matt Besler- Age 31. Sporting KC. Rumors of a move to Europe never materialized, and he remains the centerpiece of Kansas City's defense. Got a few MLS years left in him, for sure.

John Brooks - Age 25. Wolfsburg. Largely considered a puzzling selection at the time, Brooks has since proven to be a stud, and is our best defender when healthy. Could be a core leader of the USMNT in the next two cycles.

DaMarcus Beasley- Age 36. Houston Dynamo. Though he's clearly not the player he once was, he's adjusted quite well to being a left back, and has maybe a year or two left in him. Still pretty fast.

Geoff Cameron - Age 32. Stoke City. Great player, but apparently a moody locker room cancer. After Stoke's relegation, a move back to MLS seems imminent.

Timmy Chandler - Age 28. Frankfurt. Good Bundesliga player, but rarely seems to give a shite when playing for the national team. International career likely over.

Fabian Johnson - Age 30. Borussia Monchengladbach. Great player when healthy. Unfortunately, his national team days are likely done. Maybe one more Gold Cup if he's in form when 2019 rolls around.

Midfielders - Boy, this group has changed a lot in 4 years. If we were playing in this World Cup, it's likely only Bradley and Bedoya even make the roster.

Michael Bradley- Age 30. Toronto. Frustrating player who looks amazing at times and completely lost at others. He'll have some role for the national team in the next few years, but I doubt he's captain again after what happened under his leadership.

Mix Diskerud- Age 27. IFK Goteborg (Sweden). Holy shite, Mix fell hard in 4 years. It's kind of hilarious he once wore the #10 jersey. After being a very expensive, average player for New York City, he went back to Scandinavia to play in the Swedish league. Technically he is a Man City player on the books, but he seems to be on his way to the Korean league.

Alejandro Bedoya - Age 31. Philadelphia Union. Always gives 100%. He's been pretty average for the Union. International career over, you would think.

Jermaine Jones- Age 36. Retired. Went out with a bang in 2016. Is now retired and coaching at an academy in California. His badass goal against Portugal will always be remembered fondly.

Brad Davis - Age 36. Retired.

Kyle Beckerman- Age 36. Real Salt Lake. Still a starter for RSL, possibly his final year. The dreadlocks are no more.

Julian Green - Age 23. Greuther Furth. His last four years have not gone according to plan, to say the least. He still clearly has great talent. Hopefully he can find the right club and work back into the national team on a more permanent basis.

Graham Zusi - Age 31. Sporting KC. Mexico's savior is now a fullback after declining in speed. Looks like he'll be an MLS All-Star this year.

Forwards

Clint Dempsey - Age 35. Seattle Sounders. Deuce has declined rapidly in the last year or so, due to tired legs and heart problems. He'll show a glimpse of his talent on occasion, but looks like this could be his last season. Managed to tie Landon's goal record for the nation team, at least.

Aron Johannsson - Age 27. Werder Bremen. I legit can't remember the last time Bacon even played for the national team. Very talented player. Too bad he can't stay healthy. If he stays at Bremen, maybe he can mentor Sargent, at least.

Jozy Altidore - Age 28. Toronto. Jozy has joined Bradley at Toronto and helped them turn from MLS laughing stock into MLS champions. Great player when healthy and in form. He'll play a big role in the next cycle. Hopefully some of the younger guys can step up.

Chris Wondolowski - Age 35. San Jose Earthquakes. No need to mention Belgium. Wondo is one of the few decent players on a putrid San Jose team. He'll likely retire after he passes LD for the MLS scoring record. Maybe this year.

Jurgen Klinsmann- Unemployed. Maybe in MLS soon, when Sigi Schmid inevitably gets fired or eats himself to death.

Landon Donovan- Didn't make the team, but should have, so I'll include him. He has since retired and unretired twice. Has sold out for Wells Fargo cash and is currently supporting our biggest rivals.

Let's hope these next four years treat us better than the last four.

FWIW, most Newcastle fans see Yedlin as their weakest link and want him replaced.

Take note kids

moving to MLS for over your market value is bad for your career.

Why? Rimando strikes me as the guy that will keep playing as long as he can, and he can still play in MLS.

That first sentence is why the second sentence probably won't be true.

quote:

Jermaine Jones

For all the shite that Germericans (some of it warranted), this last cycle showed that out of all the veterans, Jones' heart bled for the crest and colors the most. He was an enigma when he first came into the fold, but it seemed like a switch flipped right before that World Cup and he became a legit team leader. Was one of our best players in Brazil.

quote:

Brad Davis

Let it never be forgotten that Jurgen not only took Brad fricking Davis to Brazil over Landon Donovan, but also started him in a must-get-a-result game against the eventual world champs.

What the frick.

quote:

Maybe in MLS soon

I'm pretty sure Jurgen burned the frick out of that bridge long ago, and I'm fairly certain he views coaching in MLS an insult.

Jozy would beg to differ.

Banging in goals vs subpar competition really hasn’t helped him get to the next level

He still tears up terrible international teams like he did before

Even so he would be a slight outlier if he took it to the next level

Probably helped him more than not playing at all in Sunderland.

Well he wasn’t exactly scoring when he played

Getting out of there was needed but he didn’t have to go back to MLS so soon.

Going back to Holland or a move to Germany would have probably been the best and most sensible move.

That seems like a pitiful list in hindsight. The pride of carrying the red white and blue seemed to elevate them to a respectable level in the World Cup at least.

Hopefully there are some decent younger players out there getting intnl exposure of some kind

He came back at 25 after scoring 1 goal in 45 games for Sunderland. He's at the highest level he was going to get. A very good MLS/Eredivisie player. He may have done a little better if he went to a place like Germany instead of England, but I don't think many German teams were knocking on the door in 2015.

He hasn't played against good international teams since then. He scored against Chile and Denmark shortly after signing with Toronto. Scored 2 against Peru that September. Scored against Iceland in 2016. Outside of 1 game against Brazil, Switzerland, and Serbia and a few games against Mexico, that's the extent of the decent international teams he's played since rejoining MLS.

He was injured and missed the Copa America and the friendlies leading up to it.

But what would that have accomplished? What would be the end product of going there and making less money than with the MLS? I guess you could argue that him being a better player may have been the difference between us qualifying. But if you assume nothing changes for the USMNT, his move to the MLS has made him more money.
