They probably get a bonus for busting cheats

Yes, they are pretty strict. Supposedly some airports (Chicago) are more so than others.

I don't know about a rolling carry on suitcase, but I take a full backpack every time I fly spirit and never get charged. I think it it noticeable if you have a laptop bag and backpack or big purse and other bag.

They will enforce to the letter, inch or pound.

Depends. Chicago for instance is strict. They will literally measure your bag and charge you for a millimeter over (not joking).
MSY it just depends. Sometimes they don’t care.

In my experience they aren’t that strict. I always take a big arse outdoors type backpack and fill it to the brim and a pillow and a duffle bag and never have issues.

I've tried to add a carry on at the kiosk in MSY and had a worker tell me not to worry about it. I've flown them 2-3 times since (mostly MSY-MCO) and usually bring a garment bag and my briefcase with no issue.

Just fly basic economy on the Big 3. Much better product without feeling like a 2nd class citizen.
