I keep thinking that one day the athletes will finally be able to break free from that iron fist money hungry organization, but I’m not sure.

How long until the athletes will say enough is enough?

Over 90% of college athletes cost their University a hell of a lot of money. I could only see football breaking away from the NCAA maybe.

No, it will be reformed over time to be more athlete-friendly.

probably right about the time humans quit being greedy. The NCAA is a constructed propped up by wealthy college admins, wealthy coaches, wealthy tv execs, and fans addicted to football. Do you see anyone giving up their wealth or enjoyment of football. This is not to be taken as anti NCAA or football, just an explanation of the naivete.

They’re free to leave the NCAA whenever they feel like it.

People still have unpaid internships for major corporations because they get valuable "experience" from it. Now imagine if those interns got free food, dorms, tutors, and national recognition.

But yes, South Alabama University needs to pay the punter because the NCAA generates millions of dollars.

Those companies don’t make billions of dollars from those interns talents. If clients of those companies were lining up to work with those companies because of the talented interns, then the interns would certainly have leverage to ask for money

This is essentially running your entire multi-billion dollar company completely with unpaid interns that you only pay for with housing and a free college degree.

You're incredibly naive. The vast majority of these 'interns' cost their 'companies' 10s of thousands of dollars. Every sport at every school, with the exception of football and a select few bball programs, loses money.

Seems like the interns would simply go work for a company that would pay them directly for their skills and services instead of choosing to work for the one who doesn’t.

I don't particularly give a frick about the 'vast majority' of these players and don't think that they all should get paid.

What I do think is that players that are good enough to profit off their likeness should be able to. If a Heisman-winning quarterback leads his team to a national championship and increases their revenue by millions of dollars, he should be able to keep $$$ he receives from signing autographs. That's capitalism, baby.

Very difficult to do if these interns aren't allowed to get paid for what they do until they they've been there for a minimum of 3 years and have no viable company in their industry to switch to and maintain a career in their chosen field.

No. However, I do believe at some point minor league systems could develop to bridge football and basketball players from high school to the professional leagues. That would effectively kill college sports

There's nothing stopping schools from leaving the NCAA right now. It's a voluntary organization.
