WAFB: 10 PM News 12/24/89

Greatest newscast in Baton Rouge history.

Record low temperatures under 10 degrees set the stage.

Most homes across the city shook like an earthquake was happening

Check out that hyper blue sky. Not a cloud in the sky. Looked to be a very nice day but very cold.

I remember that and the record cold. Almost every house on our street had busted pipes.

If not mistaken, that was the Commisioner of Insurance office.

Just sent that link to my wife. She’s heard me tell the story several times where I was sitting on a stool in the kitchen watching my mom cook Christmas dinner and the explosion knocked me off the stool and on my arse on the floor.

My dad was a plant baw and refinery firefighter at the Tenneco-exxon Chalmette refinery and got the call to go help.

I was at my parents house in Denham Springs when it happened. Thought the hot water heater in the attic exploded.

That WAFB broadcast is an incredible blast from the past. Pun intended.

What a dream team.

George Sells looking exactly like he always looked. There's a young Phil Rainier at the desk and young Steve Schneider in the Dome. Clarence Buggs doing sports. And the GOAT Mike Gharam doing weather.

We had a bunch of family over and were cooking dinner. For some reason, a breaker tripped. I went to the breaker box and flipped the breaker back on at the exact moment that explosion happened.

I thought I’d blown up the damn house and my dad was going to kill me. I had about 10 seconds of the worst anxiety and dread of my life.

I was 8 that Christmas. Central Mississippi. The high was 16 degrees on our back porch that Christmas Day. Remember it like it was yesterday.
