was having a putter regripped at golf connection today and wasted some time hitting in the bay.
there were four 7 irons sitting there: callaway maverick, JPX919 Hot Metal, TM P790, and some other thing.

i play my 7 iron, with no conditions, 170 yards. Mizuno MP 64, no loft adjustments.

i was flying every one of those irons 180, with rollouts well over 190. guys there said the monitor is accurate for the flight, but not rollout.
the JPX 919 Hot Metal was the best. was pushing 185 on pure hits.
bear in mind i was in slacks, button down, dress shoes, and a mask.

is this what we should be playing now? i could pick up an entire club of distance like this.
does anyone have their irons delofted?
Trying to understand if this is something i should consider to range my low irons higher.

I just got fitted for some miura cb-301s and easily got 15 yards compared to my older AP2s. Probably more to do with having the correct shaft than just the club head though.

The MP64 7 iron is just about equivalent to the p790 8 iron.

ETA the Maverick 7 iron is 7 degrees stronger than the MP64 7 iron

MP64 7 iron is 34 degrees
Maverick 7 iron is 27 degrees

You may pick up a little due to newer tech but most of the distance increase comes from the lowered loft. If you bent your current 7 iron to 27 degrees you’d hit it just about as far as one of these distance 7 irons. So you’re not really “gaining” much distance at all...you’re just hitting a lower lofted club...if that makes sense.

Your mishits with the distance iron will go farther than a mishit with your current clubs.

The feel you’re getting from the MP64 will not be found in a distance iron.

ETA if your current 7 iron is flying a true 170 yards you really don’t need any extra distance anyway. Only way I would consider switching is if I needed more forgiveness.

I hit a 7 iron between 140 and 150.

IF I bounce down the cart path, maybe I could roll one out 185.

The penalty is going to be less spin and I’d assume less decent angle as well. Not ideal conditions if you are trying to stop on a green.

So, I was shopping for some replacement irons about a month ago, decided I wanted some JPX 919 forged. Had about 4 sets I was watching on EBAY. Started drinking a little and saw a great deal for a 4-PW set for $600. Turns out my dumbass bought the Hot Metal. I picked up about 6-10 yards of distance that I didn't really need.

When I hit those type of irons, I sky them to the moon!

Also, never trust a monitor.

What’s the point of hitting a 7 iron far when you have 3-4 more irons available.

I don’t really understand what a “distance” iron means.

An iron is a precision tool, that’s it. Your irons are supposed to go specific distances.

Ball is going to go 180 and roll out... right off the green.

Keep your irons. 170 is fine distance for a 7 iron, especially a player iron.

All it does is make you carry more wedges because the PW is blasting 140. So a gap wedge is now a 9 iron.

exactly

Its basically marketing hype to convince the newer baws to the game that they can hit an 8 iron 165 with these clubs.

My G410 7 iron flys about 165yds.

Really don't want anything more out of it, too hard to fill in the gaps otherwise.

I don't carry anything higher that a 6 iron because Hybrids are just too easy to hit. I can choke up or down on my 21 degree hybrid and cover 3 different yardages.

Yeah I prefer more traditional lofts. I want my ball to stop asap when I hit an iron. I don't need a 6 iron to go 200 yds.

I think the though was they decreased the loft so it goes further, but tweaked the CG so it still goes as high.

So a distance iron 8i is a 7i loft that goes as high as the non distance 8i. So it goes further, but still has the same stopping capabilities.

It creates a weird scenario at the bottom of the bag, but allows you to have a shorter iron into greens, which is nice.

At least this is my understanding of the technology
