Personally, I like what I'm seeing.

Comments:

1. Michigan is a lot lower than I expected. They are usually competitive with UVA and Berkeley for the #1,2,and 3 spots for top public universities.

2. Colorado a lot higher than I expected. Who woulda thought those stoners would amount to anything?

3. I wonder how private universities fare relative to these schools.

I am very surprised LSU ranked as highly as it did (#27 by my count).

given the geology and petroleum related fields, I kinda figured it might be a little higher. But still very nice nonetheless

And you notice that ULL is on the list, but Tech and ULM are no where to be found...

I suspect, as a whole, the cost of living in California and its inherently higher salaries would need to be factored in some how .. I think it's skewing the results in CA's favor.

All I can figure is that LSU's numbers are skewed by the number of professional athletes that we spin off.

True. And a couple of the bottom schools were from South Dakota and similar states, where cost of living and salaries are low. I agree it should be adjusted -- there's no way UC-San Luis Obispo is a top five university.

Shaq and Jamarcus raise the average by at least $20,000.

Statistics and Damned Statistics. The whole poll is a sham for the very reason you listed. And its weighted towards areas with strong economic growth. Of course you could argue it was the educated workforce that brought growth.

And all the graduates going to work in Houston/Dallas/Austin

Pretty much everyone I graduated with in ISDS that moved to Houston started off making 55-65K at Shell, Chevron, Schlumberger, E&Y, and Protiviti.

Mich is where I expected. The surprise to me is San Jose State being that high. I know it's in Silicon Valley but it's not an exclusive school regarding admissions.

Right.

Cost of living(COL) in Baton Rouge is 51% of COL in SanFrancisco. LINK. So take those California numbers, cut them in roughly half, and then compare to LSU.

Another example: BR COL is 85% that of Denver, CO LINK

LSU @ $46,900 vs UC Berkley @ $59,900 with COL figured in . . . 59,900 X 0.51 = 30,549 or 65% of LSU's $46.9K.

we can obviously infer from this "study" then that LSU >>> Berkeley

Most of us already knew that.

or, on the other hand without COL correction, that the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is >> than Tulane.

Actually it all depends of what the meaning of your ">>>" is. Doesn't it?

If the meaning of ">>>" is that an LSU grad is more likely to be able to afford a house, car and groceries in BR than a UC grad in Berkley then, yes, LSU > Berkley.

If you're intimating comparisons of LSU vs UC-Berkley in terms of US News ranking prestige, then Berkley trumps both LSU and Tulane.

of course, the cost of living in baton rouge is extremely low compared to the cost of living in the bay area. another thing to consider is that they only polled people with undergraduate degrees.

in every ranking or prestige measurement Berkeley is > than Tulane and LSU. it is easily one of the best universities in the country. Berkeley has world class programs in engineering, computer science, business, hell just about everything

Yes and that's likely where a private school (i.e., Tulane) would make up ground. Just guessing, but suspect a higher percentage of private students move on to graduate programs . . . and proportionately better incomes.
