Hate to do it: Steve Smith?

In the wake of Friday’s troubling incident between receiver Steve Smith and cornerback Ken Lucas, the Panthers could be thinking about life without the talented-but-troubled wideout.
Matt Mosley of ESPN.com reports that there are “rumblings” out of Panthers camp that the team is fed up with Smith’s actions, and are at least considering the idea of trading him.
Mosley says that Smith has become a “divisive force” on the team: “One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn’t discipline Smith, they would.”
And Mosley, whose covers the NFC East for ESPN.com’s post-Hashmarks blog project, partially justifies his encroachment upon Pat Yasinskas’ NFC South turf by suggesting that the Cowboys could be Smith’s ultimate destination.
Other teams that would at least consider Smith include, in our view, the Eagles, Vikings, Bears, and Redskins.
Assuming that Smith wouldn’t want a new deal, his cap charge for 2008 is a very manageable $1.75 million. Because it’s after June 1, the Panthers wouldn’t take a cap hit for the move until 2009.
Smith currently is signed through 2012. His future salaries are $3.4 million 2009, $5.75 million in 2010, $7 million in 2011, and $7.75 million in 2012.
It would probably kill any chance we would have to extend Evans and/or Vilma, but we could likely get a low first/high second in exchange for Evans to make up for 1st, 3rd, and possibly 09 first day pick it could cost to get him (it would cost more to get him than it would other teams being in the same division). At worst, we could get another year of cheap labor in 2010 while Smith played opposite Colston. We would certainly be sacrificing depth and possibly success in the future, but I think we could seriously make a run at best offense of all time as long as the Oline doesn't play like it did in the first 4 games of last season.

And why would we need that loudmouth malcontent on this team again?

Because he's really good and if he beats the shite out of one of our CBs it's not as big of a loss.

No chance they trade him to anyone in the NFC south, and would most likely trade him to the AFC.

The Cowboys would be awesome if they got him. I hope he is not traded to them.

No way we trade one of our young stars on the OL for this piece. Our OLine is already not a strong point on the team. Evans is becoming one of the better guards in the game, he isn't going anywhere.

Exactly. even if they decide to part ways.....which I seriously doubt they are not trading him here
and sorry vilma is more important to this team at this point then another offensive weapon would be

Let me answer this in one word...NO! Steve Smith is a good receiver but the baggage he brings is not worth it. Leave the Smith situation alone in NC. Steve Smith to me personally and I repeat, personally, is that he is a self hyped guy that has never understood it takes a TEAM to be a team. It is never about one player. Name one player that has made a Super Bowl WINNER?

+1
The people that think Smith sucks though...

Agreed. Same division, won't happen.

If he goes to the Cowboys, hang it up. To, Smith, Witten, Barber? They'd make last year's Pats look like ULM. That would be absolutely retarded...Best offense of all time.

Best offense of all time? No, I can remember the Mark Clayton and Duper years for the Dolphns, I still see the Pats with Moss and Welker. Smith is a short guy with the Napolean attitude.

i know a lot of people dont like him, but i remeber last year when meachum was struggling, steve went out and trained with hi before the saints-panthers game and was trying to help the guy out and learn how to be better.
he might have a temper, but he is still a hell of a receiver, and he isnt an awful guy either.
but no he still isnt coming here

Please stop spreading these falsehoods re: the cap.
2 years ago the consensus on here was that we could never afford to re-sign both Grant and Smith to big-money deals. Not only have we done so, but we also re-upped Colston and STILL have more cap room than nearly every other team in the league.
I know it's annoying how often I'm right, but please let's put this line of thinking to bed once and for all.

Man, I don't know if the Panthers can afford to trade Smith.
Kinda feels like a Manny-type situation, really good player but his current team has had enough -
FWIW I would take him on the Saints in a heartbeat, I am not sold on our WR core

I think giving SS the chance to face his old team 2 times a year is EXACTLY the type of scenario that would keep him going. I'm scared to death the Bucs will make a play for him.
