Chicago Area Hotel Recommendation

I'm looking for advice on which area of Chicago to stay in while there. Flying into O'Hare for 2 nights ( Sept. 15-17 ) to see Guns N Roses at Wrigley Field on the 16th. We plan go watch the WhiteSox on the 15th and will have all day on the 16th to do touristy stuff in the city. I'd rather not change hotels and just stay somewhere between those 2 locations for a couple of nights. Any recommendations from people that have been recently?

The Loop or Magnificent Mile areas are pretty central to those two areas, and have a bunch of hotels and restaurants, and also close to a lot of attractions. Pretty sure the Red Line goes to both Wrigley and whatever the White Sox call their stadium now. You'd take the Blue from O'Hare into town.

Any of the nicer hotels around Michigan Ave. are usually very good. I know you can take the red linesubway to Wrigley from there. The red line subway can also get you to Sox Field

Lots of good hotels in River North. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn there awhile back and it was fine. Walked everywhere downtown.

I think that's the one that is right next to a subway station as well. I usually stayed at the Intercontinental a few blocks away.

One thing I will add....pay attention to room size when booking. I've ended up with a couple of very, very small rooms in Chicago by not looking at room size.

The Drake Hotel on Lake Michigan. Fine old property

Not that I’d anticipate you’ll be in the area much, since you’re only in the city for two nights / going to Wrigley, but The Loop is pretty boring — it’s a 9-5 type deal. There are a some hotels along E Wacker, which is easy access to the Riverwalk, but I’d still recommend River North.

We stayed at the JW in the Loop, the hotel was really nice and the area wasn’t bad, but I’d probably stay in River North next time.

The last time that I was in Chicago was '98 and that's where we stayed. I'm glad to hear there's a subway station nearby. I must admit that I do kinda worry about the crime problem because of my wife. She's the type that likes to make eye contact and say hello to any and everyone if given the opportunity. When we travel to big cities, I have to make her walk fast and look straight ahead at all times.

I haven't been there in 7 or so years, and I never ran into any problems in the areas you'll be. Some sketchy people on the trains maybe, but that's every major city with public transportation. I guess things can get dicey if you stray too far from the Sox park, but there's really no need to since the subway station is right next to it. My wife was a nervous wreck when I told her I was going to the Sox game by myself. I did leave in the 7th inning though to beat the crowds since I had an early flight the next morning.

The James or The Peninsula is always a good choice

Went a couple years ago and stayed at Marriott Downtown (Michigan Avenue) for a work event. Great location. Expensive, but work paid the bill.
We stayed another several days on our own nickel at the Hilton Garden Inn (66 East Wacker Place), which was much more affordable. There is a Hampton Inn next door. This area is perhaps an even better location for convenience to tourist stuff. Right on the river, and a short walk to catch a train or bus.
There was a Kimpton Hotel Monaco Chicago around the corner. I hit its bar one day, and it looked like a nice place.
