Food scale? I have a Salton digital, very accurate and easy to use. It has 2 limitations, the readout in ounces gives you fractions instead of decimals, no big deal. It has an 11 pound limit, that sounds like a lot, but if you are getting the number of servings and need the difference between an empty soup pot and a full one, a lot of pots weigh 8-10 pounds.
Mine has a 4 pound limit, but it's pretty easy to work around it. As you said, if I cook a large pot of soup I weigh all of the ingredients before adding them to the pot and jot the weights down. Then I tally up the calories, carbs, fat, and protein of each ingredient and add all of that together for a grand total of the entire pot. Once it's done cooking and cooling I weigh it as a pack into storage containers to get the weight of the soup/gumbo/etc. Then it's just simple math to figure out how much one serving size has to weigh to have an acceptable calorie and nutrient count.

I don't bother with a scale. Most of the food I buy has labels with the nutritional info and I simply divide by the portions.
When I make soups, of course the number isn't going to be perfect but it is also not going to be way off. I know the total in the pot so some portions may have a tad more calories and some less.
It does annoy me that chicken thighs sometimes are fairly even and other times there will be a MONSTER thigh and then smaller ones in the pack. In that case I just cut the sucker in half.
Once again, I won't have a perfect calorie count but it evens out. One day I may have a few more calories but that means on another day I will have less.

Ah hell, I've been looking at this and need to join. I said I was going to at first, but didn't. I would really like to drop 15 by Christmas. Currently 6' 3" 230. Want to get down to 200.

Down 1.2 lbs. this week! Very good considering I had a slab of fudge on Sunday (a rare emotional eating binge for me).

Weighing in tmrw morning. Wish me luck!

I'm still at 227.6, have weighed that the past 5 mornings. I'm working all weekend so hopefully the plateau will break while I'm running around chasing patients. My daily calorie counts have been fine, no cheats or slips, and only 2.6 lbs. to the 30 lb. mark

Down 36 lbs since 8/1, for the last month, with a lot of travel involved, down 10. After a couple of weeks of illness, finally back to walking daily for at least 30 minutes.
Good luck everyone, the weekends are the roughest for me, to much temptation.

As of Monday I've been counting calories and weighing food, and i must say, it definitely has helped. I am restricting myself to 1,800 calories a day. It's worked out well thus far. It is a great way to keep in the back of your mind not to go overboard and stay within the certain calorie count.
this weekend im going out to dinner tonight, then have a fair to go to tomorrow, and Sunday I am hoping to hit up the Po Boy fest. It will definitely test my mettle.

Bump, and the Ahuuas on Perkins has forced me to go to water and celery for a day, but it was good.

Think I need to eat a little more this week as I dropped 3 lbs in 7 days. It has been said that the key to longevity in weight loss is slow and steady.

I would be careful eating more. If you can maintain what you are doing, you should keep doing it.
You can hit plateaus going fast or slow and steady. Stick with what works until it stops working.

Good lord I am so hungry right now I could actually eat a horse. Maybe a small horse, but a horse nonetheless.
Settled down and had my usual dinner.

I made some vegetable beef soup, one of my favorite cold weather dishes, and only 300 cals for a huge 2 cup bowl.
I also went on my longest post-knee surgery walk, 2 miles, that took off 290 cals.

What cut of beef did you use?

I keep some flank steaks in the freezer, seared it, cut it up and added the veggies.
