step one:
Get you a decent set of Henkels or Wustoffs
Step two:
Spend 200 on a really nice chef's knife. I have a shun and love it.
you are out for $600 and have a far superior set.

My MIL has a complete set of cutco. I told her when she dies to give the knives to her son and I will take the La Creuset set.

yeah one is a stamped knife, one is a set of pots that you will hand down to your kids. as long as you don't do something incredible and chip the enamel it will last forever.

my classification of cutco as crap wasn't a personal attack on the judgment of your parents.

My wife bought these from a neighbor kid about 20 years ago. Love them. They stay sharp and Cutco will replace them for just about any reason. We broke the tip off of one not long ago (think my kid was using it as a flathead screw driver). Sent it to them and got a new one back in less than a week. Again, a 20 year old knife set.

It's a thread where the OP specifically asked for opinions on Cutco. I said it was crap then gave suggestions for alternatives.
You're the one who came in here white-knighting. You seem to be taking this personally.

Always wanted to do this, now could be my chance?

They are not crap. Their price does not match their quality. Are they the best knife? No. Are they the best value? Obviously not. Are they crap knives? Also no.

My parents have 30 year old Cutco. Still works great. Every couple of years, they have them sharpened.
I have Victorinox, which are also stamped. At less than 40 bucks per knife, I'm very happy with them.

Disagree. Nobody needs to buy 30 knives for $2600 or whatever it is. I recently bought a chef knife and parer for about $200 from a friend's son, included a free large board. Maybe not the best deal on the planet but consider you're probably helping someone with their education. I already own a mix of Shun, Wustof, Henkel, but have been using the Cutco stuff regularly. These are good knives.

Simply dismissing them because they are stamped shows ignorance. Great knives that keep an incredible edge. Overpriced I guess, but the ease of the lifetime warranty might be worth it to some.
Don't own any, but my mom has some that at 20 years old and they are still really good.

We have a set that is older than our marriage (35 years). My husband bought them when his younger brother sold them while in college.
We have had one replaced because we bent the tip somehow.
We also own the steak knives but they are only about 10 years old.
While they may not be the best, they certainly have been worth whatever my husband paid for them way back when.
