Melania? That’s been my hardest fight so far. I haven’t beat her yet. Her and the Fire Giant kicked my arse more than anyone else. It’s really started to click here at the end though. Comet Azur with Terra Magica, and Rykard’s Rancor, has carried me through Godskin Duo on. I fought Radagon/Elden Beast and got the Elden Beast down to half health and got smoked. I think I have him though.
Fire Giant was just insane given his hit points. 25,000 hit points to wack away just takes a lot of time. The bloodhang fang+9 is how I beat him.
Melania. Yes, the Queen of Scarlot Rott. I got to her last night for the first time. My first run against her I was able to knock her down to 50% in the second run before I die. I tried for two hours last night, can only get her down to 50% on the second run. Also, the flower move at the beginning of the second phase cracks me. In that run Tiche was wreaking her shite with that little knife and blackfire blood move. So, I found a Black Knifes on the Altus Plateau and defeated him. He drops Tiche's weapon. Every time you hit Melania with that weapon, the takes about 1000 damage. The special move on the knife shoots out that black death bleed fire. I have been knocking her down to 50% on the second run for the past 20 times, but I cannot avoid the sword dance and that kills me.
So, I am going to change my strategy, for an hour last night I just fought her without summons for the first level. I started just testing a bunch of different incantations because I found she is very resistant to Glenstone magic. I started testing blood flies, Dragon Ice (effective), Scarlot Rot(does nothing),Dragon Fire, Madness and some magic i got from the elden Beast. Of those I found, Fire, Frost, Madness and Bleed effects her most.
Also, she is super fast but has very low pose, so its easy to break her. Tiche can knock her on the ground.Blood files will do decent damage about 300, but I found it interrupts many of her sword sequences. I found that timing the jump with my knife when she does that stab move, allows me to jump over it and smack her in the face with bloodfire. Madness is very good against her, she takes 1500 damage on a full madness run. Every hit with the black knife special move is a 1000 or so hit points. I hit her with dragon ice last night and found she could not do as many sequences while she had frostbite. Finally, using rivers of blood is very good because of the bleed and fire effects. When Tiche is attacking her, I can jump in with a five hit combo and put her on her back.
I am trying to learn how to dodge the the sword dance. So basically I was told that when she signals the dance, that I should just run away from her for the first 2 moves, then roll into her on the 3rd move. To avoid her, I got it right once.
My strategy tonight will be to get her down to about 25% tonight in the 1st phase using madness, blood files, and black knife. Then when she gets that low summon Tiche and make sure I am fully juiced for the 2nd phase. The flower move will go after Tiche, then I will start hitting her with dragon fire and black knife and hope I can avoid the sword dance.

I don't really have any recollection of my fight with Malenia...I'm not joking when I say this but I'm pretty sure I beat her on the 2nd try during my first run through the game. And I have struggled A LOT with a bunch of other bosses. I have no clue what I did to beat her TBH

dude just I-frame through the flower attack, it's the easiest move to dodge in her whole repertoire. just roll or bloodhound step right before impact and you will only take chip damage from the aura. don't summon tiche until after the first flower since it will put a big dent in her health

That is a good idea, maybe I can use Tiche as a bullet sponge after the flower. I cannot seem to get the roll right to be honest, I am always a fraction early or late. Same with the sword dance, I know what I have to do, just cannot get my brain and fingers in sync yet. Just an old man trying to play games! I am 50, I grew up playing Atari 2600 and playing 2 dimensional games (Defender, Super NES, Donky Kong, etc). The 3d aspect of today's video games with camera angles still give an old fart like me issues. Took me like 20 hours to figure out how the camera lock system worked and that you could run away with the camera still showing the enemy. Only my third video game since I stopped playing games around 29. I started playing Elden Ring like I played Ultima Online, moving the camera by moving my player...

what's your equipment load? I could dodge it every time with Medium load, maybe if you're heavy it lowers the I frames and requires more precision. Experiment and see

Same with the sword dance
Either bloodhound step, or run away for first flurry, dodge forward for 2nd flurry, wait a split second, then either sit still or dodge forward again for third flurry based on elevation. Once it clicks it's easy (unless you're too close to her when she starts it)

Yeah she has wrecked my shite pretty bad. I think she’s the reason I set up my death run of spells for the end game
Are you talking about the Black Knife dagger? I have it but haven’t tried it yet. I might give that a shot. I was using a +6 Rivers of Blood, but I have it up to +10 now. I’m going to try her again after the Elden Beast.

I roll medium for most fights but I have gone to a light load to make my roll easier. I need medium for this fight I think because its a physical attack fight. I will only use heavy when I am on horseback.

I will have to go look that one up to see what it does. Thanks for the tip.

Black Knife
Yes, I upgraded it to +9. I have rivers of blood at +10 and when Tishe is engaged with her, I can pull off the 5 move sequence that breaks her pose. That normally does 4000 damage at my level. But the black blood called Blade of Death. When you combine that with Shard of Alexander, it will put at least 800-1000 hit point damage on her each time it lands. Problem is it does not stack with Tishe, so when Tishe is hitting her with it, I usually switch to the pest control thing shot by the shrimp in Calade. That is how I have gotten her 50% on 2nd phase the first time I faced her. But I found madness is way more effective than the pest control stuff.

I also found out last night, any of the weapons you acquired that may be on the list of “Legendary Armaments Trophy”, have to be acquired on one run through. So if you have them, you need to put them in your chest before starting NG+ or you will lose them:
Ruins Greatsword: Defeat the Misbegotten Warrior and Crucible Knight in Redmane Castle
Eclipse Shotel: Chest in Castle Sol
Grafted Blade Greatsword: Kill Leonine Misbegotten in Castle Morne
Sword of Night and Flame: Chest in the Caria Manor
Marais Executioner's Sword: Kill Elemer of the Briar in The Shaded Castle
Dark Moon Greatsword: Follow Ranni's quest until the Moonlight Altar
Devourer's Scepter: Kill Invader Bernahl in Farum Azula
Golden Order Greatsword: Kill Misbegotten Crusader in the Cave of the Forlorn
Bolt of Gransax: Loot on the Giant spear in Leyndell. This weapon is potentially missable during a playthrough if the player progresses the story beyond the Mountaintops of the Giants.

This is the clip from when I beat her: LINK
2:04, 4:00, and 4:51 for roll timing on Scarlet Aeonia
1:20 and 3:23 for Waterfowl dodge timing (not perfect on the second one, got clipped at the end when the tracking pulled me to her with the camera switch)
2:41 for how to use Bloodhound Step if you're too close when she starts Waterfowl. Also shows roll timing for the 2nd and 3rd flurries

There’s no way this is correct is it? I carried the grafted blade sword through into ng+ for sure. I’ll have to check on any of the others later but I’m positive I didn’t move them over into the chest

you don't lose them, but the achievement progress is bugged. You can fix it by putting them all in your chest and then taking them out. I haven't even gone to NG+ yet and I had to do the chest deal for it to pop

Great job, thanks for sharing. I like that, I need to find that ash of war. I think I can put that on my katana. I like how you use it to get out of trouble, that is my problem in many fights, they can close the distance on my so much faster than I can dodge. Also, that is why I had problems with Elden Beast, I just took me a while to figure out how to stay close to do damage, but not so close that I get one shotted.

I did not know I could put stuff in the chest! I though that was just something that held my overflow of arrows!

I may have misread but I thought it said I had to find them again in NG+. I loaded everything in my chest anyway in case I forget. The only one I didn’t find was the Bolt of Gransax and it’s too late.

You have to find Great Runes and the Remembrances again I believe - they disappear from your inventory upon starting NG+ if I'm not mistaken - but if you already got items from the remembrances then you keep them for good.

My son confirmed this for me. I asked him, he said this exactly. I can keep Radan's armor and all items I have but will loose all the story items and great runes go back to zero.

Ah ok. Yes I think I read that it was a thing for some people in 1.03 and that it was fixed for 1.04 but you may still need to move them into the chest and back out to get the trophy

Thanks for clearing that up

I do think this is accurate. For trophy purposes, if you didn't collect them all the first time through, then you have to put them in the chest and then back out again if you want to get the trophy.
