How the frick did anybody ever progress in this game without some sort of guide? The steps to level up spirit ashes alone....

They definitely don't give you any sort of quest log.

I just hit level 40 and am going through the Academy of Raya Luceria. Should I stop and go to a different area first to do some leveling?

I've been doing a faith build with black fire, which feels totally OP. Got a weapon that causes bleed buildup that I put a holy buff ashes of war on that seems to do crazy damage if I need to melee. I think it's just a simple katana though so definitely need to upgrade that. Using the godslayer charm to cast spells and my armor is just pure crap except for the crimson hood that I got because apparently I did that quest in the wrong order.

Torn between pumping strength and faith and going for a holy warrior type build with the tree sentinel weapon or pumping mind, dex, and faith and just continuing the black fire spam.

The academy and surrounding areas are where you want to be.

Playing it at release before the fextra wiki was loaded up with info definitely made the game more difficult, particularly when it came to NPC side quests. The approach I took was to simply pick up everything, and make sure I exahausted the dialogue of every NPC I encountered. Periodically, when I was stuck or struggling, I would go to the map, find all of the NPC icons, and go talk to them again to see if there were any updates to their questlines or dialogue. This generally kept me current on anything that needed to be done.

That said, I still missed a lot of shite or had quest lines end because I did things out of order. I did a second playthrough from scratch about a month or two ago and used guides to try and accomplish every side quest that I possible could.

That sounds brutal for casual gamers who might take a bit between game sessions.

Imagine picking up the game after not playing for a week.

Elden ring isn't hard to figure out when it comes to where to go. You're told where to go from each s.o.g.

It's really a game built around exploration and finding dungeons. Which I'm fine with.

Due to my schedule I normally pick it up every other day and knock out an hour to two hours. Plenty of time for the small dungeons and exploration if using a guide.

Finally beat that Black Blade. I can’t count how many tries it took me. I started to wonder if it was some kind of sick joke and he couldn’t be beaten.

This game is fantastic.
