Why the frick won't Sony fix the bug with PS4 where you have to eject and re-insert the damn disk if you have the audacity of accidentally trying to install the game without enough space?

Nice trigger warning at the beginning

Do not buy. I'm soo disappointed this game has graphics from 10 years ago.

I got to agree with you, I pre-ordered a month ago because I was a major Mafia 2 fan and I'm about 3 hours into the game and I'm just severely disappointed the game is laggy and it at times it is reminiscent of The Godfather for the original Xbox in terms of graphics. 3/10

Was hoping this was gonna be a sleeper.

Been some good games, but 2016 continues to be disappointing for games.
I have a feeling The Last Guardian will continue that trend.

I don't mind the graphics. It reminds me a lot of AC Syndicate for some reason, but the lighting is weird in certain spots. I was driving in the afternoon and couldn't even see the road for the glare on screen.
The camera angle when driving annoys me. The camera stays put until the car is almost perpendicular to the camera angle when turning.
I just got past the preliminary missions. The first couple hours in the game felt very much like Mafia 2. I have a feeling now is where the game starts to get repetitive, but I will update my thoughts as I go along.

The sentries are annoying. They really encourage you to take a stealthy approach. I do like the game so far, but the whole "do x number of side missions" to progress the story is bad game design.

I recruited all the sub-bosses or whatever you call them, at least I think I did: Vito, Cassandra, and Burke. Pretty much every mission thus far has been go to an area of the city, talk to a guy, talk to another guy nearby, do a handful of the same tasks (shoot up a brewery, assassinate some dude, burn trailers, etc), draw out a racketeer, kill racketeer, do it all over again at least once to kill a second racketeer, then do a mission to kill a main guy. I do like the main missions, but the game is filled with so much unnecessary padding.
I am at a point now where the game's sub-systems are starting to make a bit more sense. I can do side missions for the characters I've recruited and allow them to preside over certain areas of the map to gain loyalty. I have no idea what loyalty will do for me later in the game as this is not explained.
So far, I don't consider this game bad at all, but I do wish there were more unique main missions and less pointless padding.
I feel like this game will end up with scores all over the map. A lot of people will hate it, and some people will like it kind of like Mafia 2. I don't know if I like the game more than the previous entry in the series, but I am enjoying it.

Agreed. I'm enjoying it but it's not the best game ever. There is a lot of repetition, but at least it's mostly fun repetitiveness. Lincoln is brutal with the knife and I still enjoy that part. The AI is pretty stupid, though. Way too easy to sneak up on someone and bad guys still stick their heads up behind cover at a predictable spot and time. I like killing so it doesn't bother me too much. Someone looking for a challenge will be disappointed.
I don't have any issue with the graphics. Not top notch but still pretty good. The lighting does get annoying at times. I've heard about some issues with the game crashing. So far it's happened to me just once. I had just driven from the southern bayous to the northern part of the map. As I got to my destination the game crashed. I was furious at first since I was going to have to make the boring trip again, but the game loaded up and I was at my destination. Not a big deal in the end but would suck if it happened a few times instead of just the once.
I do like the story a lot. Voice acting is really good and the flashforwards are well done. There have been some good sets/areas in the game as well. Fairly early on there is a big mission at an amusement park. Loved that one.
The map is okay. I think it does a decent job of capturing the feel of New Orleans and the bayou. There are some recognizable landmarks. It does take a long time to travel around and it get's old after you've been in the world for awhile. It's annoying to drive all over town to collect your money...hopefully I missed something where you can do that automatically. As you progress you get some perks like guns and auto deliveries.
If you're on a budget or have a backlog of games I would suggest waiting to play this game. If you're looking for something new and don't mind $60 on a decent game then go for it.

So this game is sitting on my counter unopened. Should I return it or give it a shot?
Final thoughts?

this is just poor game design typical of filth like Ubisoft and the like. I'll wait till this is $20 in a couple months. so much potential wasted.

Blah blah blah, it's a good game.

Ubisoft will pack a bunch of superfluous crap into their open world games, but they don't really require you to do any of it. The best comparison would be the first couple of Saint's Row titles, but the structure of Mafia III makes it feel way more repetitious.

I'm downloading it now. I really like narrative-based games. Gameranx on Youtube convinced me to give it a shot. I figure if I was willing to overlook TLOU's potato AI because it's story and environment were so great, I might as well try Mafia III.
Plus, I'm bored and I've played/replayed all my current games to death.

I really like it so far, but I'm still pretty early in the game. It's got a pretty good narrative story so far. Just finished the amusement park level, that was fun as hell, really liked the ride section and the story told. I'm sure if it wasn't set in a fictional nola i wouldn't like it as much, but so far so good, don't think I've gotten to the super repetitive parts yet.
