ETA: Sony chose to antagonize what they should have known was a much larger and much more capable corporation. No one made them do that. Nothing that happened during the 360 era made them do that. Sony did that.
To suggest that this is all because Sony made Microsoft feel bad is laughable.
What happened is that Microsoft finally put someone in charge of Xbox who was able to convince Microsoft-proper to throw their weight behind it.
Any one company buying up all the game developer/publishers is a terrible thing for the industry as a whole. If it isn't blatantly obvious now, it will be over time.
Realistically though, it was only a matter of time before companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, etc just said frick it and started buying up all the these companies because their adventures into gaming failed so terribly. Phil Spencer and Microsoft are just beating them to the punch.

I make no such claim. I'm just saying it's clear that Microsoft was trying to do something different before they started making these huge purchases. Sony didn't see the writing on the wall.

How about they now put all of the older Call of Duty’s on Gamepass. No reason I should still have to pay $30+ dollars for these.

I'm sure they will. A large majority of Bethesda's back catalog is on Game Pass. This Activision purchase won't go through until FY 2023 (which starts this July), so we'll probably see most of Activision's back catalog show up on Game Pass after that.

Maybe that cancelled Starcraft FPS can now become a reality.
This is bad for the industry as a whole, but I feel like the quality and output of Blizzard specifically will see major improvements.

the perception of Blizzard is pretty much at an all time low, not sure MS can resurrect the past favor they had with gamers
