Just got this promotional email. Shots fired:

"With Xbox All Access, joining the next generation is easier than ever. Get an Xbox Series S and 24 months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate starting from $24.99/month (a $59.99 savings*) for 24 months and no upfront cost."

The only reason I would buy a Series S would be to install emulators on it

Microsoft has a good track record of doing great things with acquired companies

Should be great news for Warcraft/Starcraft fans

The NFT and Metaverse implications of this purchase is kinda mind boggling.

Seems obvious Microsoft is setting themselves up to fully take advantage of the Metaverse.

Hopefully someone has already put Bethesda and Obsidian in a locked room and............waited for something to happen.

Yep. Can't possibly be worse than what Blizzard has become.

Nadella alluded to this being the main reason for the acquisition. All those IPs will have huge metaverse implications

It's what Facebook is calling themselves these days. What they seem to be trying to go for is what the sorry sacks in Wall-E were doing (if you've ever seen that movie).

The NFT market was the first thing I thought of when wondering why make this purchase now, what was the impetus.

Anyone think this means Overwatch 2 will release sooner now, or could this actually delay things further (if that's even possible)? Also wonder how this affects things like Overwatch League and Call of Duty League.

There is no chance Microsoft is emailing Activision employees with anything that specific prior to this deal being approved by regulators.

If you can't create your own exclusives that'll compete with PS, might as well buy all the IPs. It's a power move for sure.

Uhh didn't sony just buy up all these small companies to get their exclusives? What exactly is the difference... As a xbox fan boy for life I love it. I want my retribution... Well I really play on PC now but game pass is better than anything PS has offered. Yes I know I cant play God of war and spiderman... don't care. I have hundreds of games at my finger tips for literally $1 a month more than gold... And since I bought 3 years in advance... $1 a month

Phil Spencer tweeter after talking to Sony:

"Had good calls this week with leaders at Sony. I confirmed our intent to honor all existing agreements upon acquisition of Activision Blizzard and our desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation. Sony is an important part of our industry, and we value our relationship."

Phil is a business man, but he's been banging the drum as far as cooperation between the platforms for a while. Feels it can only be good for the game industry if they work together and not be so tight assed about cross play and other issues. He was even quoted saying there should be cross banning, meaning if you get banned on the PC on 2042, if you try to go to the PS5 that ban carries over to there.

I think that's a bit much, but point is, at least on the surface, he's not out to crush Sony. Microsoft will be smart about it and make the right business moves, but I believe him when he says they'll honor all previous agreements.

Going forward is a different story.

the only way i see it working out with them both existing is if they both mutually agree to make all "exclusives" cross-platform. basically ending "exclusives" all together.

halo moves to PS
spiderman moves to Xbox

those are just a few examples, and i realize that's probably never going to happen. but since sony has basically removed all other media from their ps store (movies/tv shows), what else is there that they offer that microsofy doesn't? is PS+ really a competitor to Game Pass? meh. what about PSNow? i don't know of a single person that subscribes to that service.

sony is going to have to play ball if they want to remain relevant. what do they give up? their IP exclusives? that's all they have left pretty much. i'm really surprised they gave up MLB The Show this past year.
