Bungie is worth 3.6 billion? Is Destiny that good?

Destiny 2 is still played by quite a few people and brings in a ton of revenue. It's usually in the top 10 most played on Xbox and Playstation each month.

This is really about the future though. Bungie is building a new AAA multiplayer IP (codenamed "Matter") that's about 2-3 years away. No doubt Sony has seen it at this point and is impressed.

By the late 2020s Bungie could be a studio managing two AAA live service games with Matter and potentially Destiny 3.

Think about how much Minecraft, Fortnite, CS:GO, LoL, etc, bring in each month. Now imagine a company owning two live service games of that caliber.

That's what Sony's going for with this purchase. It's not about Playstation exclusivity, it's about building and owning multiplatform live service games.

Destiny 2 may be bigger than ever. It just broke it's preorder record for an expansion.

The Destiny franchise will easily cover this investment in the coming years. It has tons of development potential and anything else they can come out with would just be bonus.

I know Destiny prints money, but I tried to get into it and couldn't, so not a huge loss for me being a PC/Xbox consumer.

Bungie's next IP (Codename Matter) is more what this is about, not Destiny. Destiny 2 is huge though, crazy to think it's the #6 most played game on PS5, after Fortnite, COD, Madden, NBA2K.

Is that as big of a deal as you think? Less than 20 million PS5 have been sold because of chip issues.

It was #4 on Xbox Series X/S, but same chip issues.

I don't think the guy is saying Destiny is not played on many platforms. He is just saying it is still played a lot.

Bungie hasn't been relevant since Halo. Not a big loss for xbox owners honestly.

You greatly underestimate how many people play Destiny.

Halo has way more brand value, but Destiny has had crazy amount of money and player counts.

I don't think this purchase is really about Destiny though. Sony has no developer that can do what Bungie has done. I imagine they want to have a big game studio that can pump "Games as a Service" titles. Bungie also has a shocking 900+ employees, so it'll get them a lot to work with.

Saw a story where Sony plans to have (10) games as a service titles rolling by 2026 and sounds like Bungie's time with Destiny is going to be the catalyst for those games.

This is a big reason. Apparently 1.2 billion of this money is going into a retention plan to keep them from leaving. The IPs bought is not the main goal.

It's like these companies do so good then in their hubris, they just start fricking up so badly.

Well games as a service are by far the most profitable and popular games these days.

It is just the way now.

Warzone, Destiny, GTA online, LOL, Overwatch, FF14, Fortnite, Apex. Even call of duty yearly releases are now.

No single release game can compete with that from profit.

I don't think this means they will stop making games like HZD, GOW or Bloodborne.

I would not say popular. There are the big dogs - Destiny, GTA Online, and then there's literally everyone else who try and fail to capture their success much like the big MMO boom of the early 2010s.

Hoping this means Sony Pictures gets involved with the Destiny universe.

This is what bungie wants from the deal. Lore nerds like me understand there's at least 4 good movies worth lore already written in universe. With the success of Arcane the Destiny universe can hop over to film and be Uber profitable
