Though let’s see him do it in a full field event.
Well he just beat the top 29 other players in the league. Not sure what difference having an additional 40 lower ranked players would do.
Are you suggesting this victory is any less due to field size?

Yep.
Whoever wins this one tournament is the PGA Champion. Hell, Rory even skipped the first one at Memphis and STILL had a chance to win. Either use the points earned during the season to seed the golfers for the three events... and then set them all at 0 points. So you have to play to advance. Nobody gets a "bye" (well, Rory didn't get a bye so much as he took a bye, if that makes sense". But this format is stupid.
Still... glad for Tommy.
Skins elimination tournament.

Yes, that is exactly what I’m saying. Beating 29 is easier than beating 155.

such a stupid as shite way to determine the "PGA Champion", imo. I hate that they have a "playoff" that is then determined like a normal tournament.
I agree. IMO, the way they did this 2018 and prior was the way to do it. Golf isn't like other sports. There is nothing wrong with having a tournament champion and year long champion. It's so ridiculous to me that Scottie has a massive lead and then gets put in a tournament to determine the "champion" with 30 other guys and him getting no advantage for what he did all season long. Even in team sports with playoffs, there is an advantage for being the #1 seed.
I've seen some stuff online about different ways to do this if they're adamant about a winner taker all tournament. I'd think about having a multi-format event with byes for guys finishing at the top of the standings, starting with stroke play rounds to qualify for a match-play tournament. Maybe have #s5-30 have a 2 day stroke play event, 1-4 getting a bye, with the top 4 advancing to match play. Then have an 8-man match play tournament to determine the champion.

That’s a very simplified way of looking at it though. The 29 guys he beat were the best players on tour all year. It’s not like he beat 29 other random players. The other 29 had to qualify to get there.
I’m not a fan of the way the event is structured, but it doesn’t dilute Tommy’s win.

I wanted Scottie to win simply because I like Scottie more and wanted him to have the season long trophy because he was the most dominant all year, but hard to be mad with Fleetwood winning after the brutal finishes he's had lately.
PGA Tor year long race ironically resembled the LIV race. Neiman wins 5 times and loses out to a guy who only won once, the final tournament of the year. Scottie dominates and loses out to a guy that only won once.
I don't know how to fix the pga format, because I didn't like starting the guy at the top at -10 either, but they need to keep tweaking it. Scottie was punished for having a dominant season.

Nah.
You think Fleetwood would have played worse..."Oh... I not only gotta play better than Scottie, I gotta play better than than number 155 guy as well.".

You accumulate points throughout the season, right?
That part is fine. Then use those points to seed golfers. That's what they do, right?
Then let those point carry over from tournament to tournament. If Scottie (or whomever) had won both the Fed Ex and the BMW, then they SHOULD start with more points that the rest of the field. Make the points enough so that if you win the final tournament, you at least have a chance of winning if say the guy leading comes in dead last. But if you are Scottie, and you come in 4th in the final tournament, given what you've done previously, you really ought to win the dang Fed Ex Cup. Scottie wins the FedEx cup, Fleetwood still picks up his first win...

The 30 players who did the best over the course of the season were there.
It’s a great win for anyone.
I’m sure TF is thrilled to win a PGA tour event

Yeah that's the way the FedEx Cup worked before they changed it in 2019. Bryson led in points entering East Lake with Justin Rose at #2. Tiger sat at #20. Tiger won the golf tournament, but Rose finished T4th so he held on to win the FedEx Cup Title, with Tiger finishing 2nd.

you fix it by going back to what it was 6 years ago.

My memory aint that good
Saw golf digest or some other site post on FB that if they were using last years format, Scottie would have won at -23 and Fleetwood 2nd at -22.

I think you just have to put a greater emphasis on being the regular season champion, and then kind of have the playoffs be a separate thing.
It feels to me like the sole reason that isn’t done is because FedEx is the biggest PGA Tour sponsor and it feels like everything has to lead up to that tournament.

They said it was hard for fans to follow who was leading, despite the fact that they put it on the screen constantly. Their original solution was starting guys at certain numbers under par before the tournament started so that fans could follow along like that. Then they scrapped all of that this year with all 30 guys starting at even.
I don't know what the huge deal was with having a tournament champion and an overall champion. They basically were fixing something no one was complaining about in the first place

No, no it really wasn't. Not even a little bit.

So glad to see him win. My daughter was the standard bearer in the Bradley/Henley group right in front of Fleetwood and Cantlay. She wanted him to win also but it would have been cool if one of her group won. I walked alongside her most of the round but hung back a couple of times to watch him. She had Burns and Taylor for her Friday shift .
