I can hit irons pretty decent, I have the confidence when hitting them. My driver is a joke.
1 I never get a lot of power. I have the feeling that if I swing hard it’ll not go a county over.. but even not overseinging it’s a slice or one that goes maybe 200 on a good one..
2 I’ve worked on not coming over the top, trying to get the body involved and it’s the same old story…
I’m gonna break down and get a few lessons. The chipping and iron play is not great but I can see improvement from last year when I started playing…the driver has been an albatross around my neck.. love it anyway. I played at this course called Prestwick near Myrtle. Pretty good course if your ever in the area.. vent over

The driver is a different swing. Only club where you’re swinging up at impact. Make sure you’re tilted (spine tilt away), ball is on left heel, wider stance and drop the right foot slightly for an inside path.

Your clubface might be open at address.

Also, if your ball position is too far back, you don’t have time to square the face up.

Don’t try to hit up on it too much. You can get all kinds of crazy misses that way. The ball should be just in front of the very bottom of your swing arc.

Don’t try to steer it. Hit that mf’er as hard as you can as long as you’re staying balanced.

May sound crazy to you but when I started playing golf 3 years ago I could not hit my driver to save my life. I teed off with a 3 iron for a year and a half. People would laugh at me on the tee box but I could hit my 3 iron straight and long. I eventually moved to a driver and I think hitting the 3 iron helped me with that transition. I love hitting my driver now.

Yea I feel ya. I've solved a few of my issues lately. Got a lesson, that helped. Driver swing is not the same as an Iron swing. at least not for me. I was doing far too much shoulder turn with my driver. Made me too steep. I was popping up , slicing almost every bad shot imaginable. Like someone already said in here . I did not trust my swing with the driver and kept trying to steer it etc. I finally said frick it I'm just gonna relax and hit it.

Nothing wrong with hitting a 4i off the tee.

Lowered my scores.

ETA: I'm 1.5 years into playing

To reach your full potential in golf, distance off the tee is paramount.

Yes it must be in play, but please do not give up on learning to swing your driver.

A PGA teaching pro can help you do this.

I guess IF you can hit a 4 iron 250, it does not matter for recreational play, but IF you want to be the best golfer you are capable of becoming learning to hit a driver in play matters.

Plus you can upgrade your driver every year chasing 5 more yards!

Has always been my biggest issue. I have enough club head speed to get the ball up in the air though. I did find that going with a higher lofted driver has helped.

I feel like I use my arms too much and not enough body. How do you train yourself out of that

Been playing a while and driver finally clicked for me within the past couple years.

Put your feet together with the ball and driver in the middle and take a slightly wider step back with the trail foot and bring the driver head with you in that step (dont leave it behind the ball). Face should be about 6-8 inches behind the ball now. I dont ground it, but you may want to try both ways. Take your club to the top and then initiate the swing with the legs. Have a loose grip on the handle and let it release in the bottom and then turn on the after burner with your body. The timing of the burn will make or break your drives. I've hit some of the longest and straightest drives doing this.

I use to yank the handle at the top and try to murder the ball and I was slice central. The feeling now feels like I'm barely going to dink the ball off the tee but if I time the explosion right, I hit missles.

I’m intrigued, but I’m not sure I’m following what you are saying exactly. Can you explain it again? Are you saying just move your trail leg back?

Get fitted. As was said, it’s a different swing really, grip, shaft, loft. Lots of factors that a professional fitting can help.

Best club in my bag these days

What kind of driver do you have? What shaft? What’s your swing speed? What’s your flexibility like? How far do you hit your 7 iron?

There are a lot of potential paths to hitting a driver well. You don’t necessarily even have to get fit tbh. I found a driver off of ebay and started hitting the ball 50-60 yards further after a few months of practice with it. The funny thing is, I even accidentally bought the wrong version of the driver I was trying to buy and it still worked out fine. I thought I was buying an LS head and instead mistakenly bought the normal version.

It's kind of like a Mo Normal set up, but my legs stay a bit more active. Stance is slightly wider than normal, but instead of grounding/hovering the club directly behind the ball (which opens your shoulders), I square it all up to the center of my stance which means the club is now 6-8" behind the ball.

I load up on my trail leg and use the load to start the swing but then I feel like I try to "hit" the ball after club makes impact. So, the swing feels really loose and smooth until right at impact and I let all my energy go out in front.

ETA: may want to start teeing it a bit lower to begin so you dont give yourself an idiot mark on top of the driver. Hands have to stay strong grip and very loose on the grip.

Shawn Clement is the inspiration for me trying this swing without all of the pausing at the top, etc.

The pro will identify what is going on with your swing. When I don't have confidence in my driver, my natural tendency is that I slow my swing speed way down and I quit focusing on acceleration. When I get back to focusing on acceleration through impact, it starts going straighter again.
