So, before the Masters, there is always a post about about how weekend warriors would do at Augusta.
My buddy Jack works the Masters every year and gets to play every May. It’s members tees and I’m sure it’s nowhere near as tricked out, but still …. Jack has an 18.1 HDCP with a scoring average of 92.8.
Shot 98 and he has done better, but has not broken 90 at Augusta.

and yes, Gary is REALLY bad.

Members tees are different for sure but I always find it humorous that people and the pros act like a low handicap/scratch golfer would be doing well just to make it through 18 holes at a major venue.

I think it was a us open a couple years ago and some pros were asked what a scratch player would shoot around that course. Some said it would be at least 100 if not 110+.

I could buy this on a really tough U.S. open venue where they're playing from 7700 yards, the rough is just a wedge out (if even findable), the greens extremely firm and fast, and maybe the wind is up as well. A pro's length, accuracy, and the amount of spin and height they can put on a ball would be a huge advantage over even a scratch player for these conditions.

But Augusta National's main defense are the greens which is something a scratch would gradually adjust to throughout the round. There would be some extra shots, but not as many as people like to think.

11 fairways & only 2 GIR is pretty brutal...were the greens that tough to hold?? Too long? Or just a bad day with the irons?

I feel like chipping at Augusta is the last thing you want to be doing, would still blow a load to play 18 holes there though no matter what I shot.

If they are playing Masters speed greens they would average a 3 putt every hole imo

I'm pretty confident that a scratch player could average better than 3 putts every hole, especially with a caddie and if they manage to make it on the right level every now and then. Also, a few of the greens, such as 11, 12, and 15 don't really have that much to them outside of a gradual slope. They might even 4 putt on a hole or two early on, but they'd be able to adjust.

NOT tournament conditions but still challenging. ALSO, we just finished a golf tournament weekend with 36 holes on Saturday, and 18 on Sunday in Port St. Lucie. He drove back to Orlando (2+ hours) and then to Augusta on Monday. I think playing on Tuesday and shooting 98 is pretty damn good considering. I think 86 is his all-time low score and that was at an “easier” course here in Orlando – Eagle Creek. Yes, I’m sure the greens were not Masters level, but they are still tricky for most golfers.

Point is:
Average golfer in tournament conditions will probably NOT break 100.
Average golfer in member conditions can break 100.

I wish more courses had the score cards going vertical.

It's always revealing when the "could you win the masters if you started on the green" question comes up and people claim a normal person wouldn't even make the cut starting on the green

A 7 handicap who played it the Monday after Masters (Sunday pin locations). He shot 83 from Member Tees (6,300 - 6,400 yards). He also has never played it and feels like knowing/playing the greens at least 1 time would absolutely help him score lower if he played it again.

I was fortunate enough to play Pebble Beach in August of 2000, two months after the US Open. I was a 9 at the time and shot 2 over on the front and bogey golf on the back for an 83 while playing primarily from the same tees in relation to the Open.

We played on a rather benign day 65-80 deg day depending on where you were on the course. I was feeling pretty good about myself until we had a rather long wait in the fairway at 15. Every fairway up to that point was sharply defined into 1/3's with a perfectly groomed and green two lane highway down the center bordered by wider brownish green fairway on each side, and very thick narly rough outside of that.

My caddy pointed out the outside "lanes" of the fairway were in fact 6-8" rough during the Open and were in that condition due to them being cut back to fairway height in the weeks since. He then mentioned that the narly rough I had been fortunate to avoid most of the day was half the height it had been for the Open. It was also at that time I realized that my drive on 15 was the first one that had ended up in the mown center portion of the fairway, and the previous ~10 fairways I had hit would've been in 8" rough in Open conditions. My only two double bogeys of the day were both due to drives being in the rough.

I have played better, but I hit the ball and scored really well that day, in conditions in which the ball was unaffected by wind and flying really well in the heat. I am certain that same round would've been 15-20 shots higher had I played it in Open conditions/weather. Throw in the loss of confidence/mental drain, and there was no way in hell I would've broke 100.

I played ANGC while on the UGA golf team. We played the member tees (no one was allowed to play from anywhere else at that time) and all 10 of us shot 76 or better. That was before it had been lengthened and the second cut added. I’d like to think I could still break 80 from the member tees.

I played in the US Open at Oakland Hills in the mid 90s and no single digit handicap could break 80 on that golf course.

I played Harbour Town on the day after the Heritage for many years and shot anywhere from 68-79.

If you let me put the ball on the green at ANGC I could probably put it in places that average golfers would have 50 putts a round.

Went through sectional (now final) qualifying in the Atlanta area. Won a playoff for my spot.

Broke 80 both days, which was my goal.

Didn’t play with anyone you’d know on Thursday/Friday, but played a Tuesday practice round with Davis Love III and Steve Jones who went 1-2 in the tournament. I knew Davis and Mark from living in St Simons and working at a course DL3 designed, so when I qualified, all it took was a phone call to set that up.

Advanced through both local and sectional (now final) qualifying. Won a playoff for my spot. Broke 80 both days so achieved my main goal for the week.

Didn't play with anyone you've ever heard of Thursday/Friday, but played my Tuesday practice round with Steve Jones and Davis Love III who finished 1-2 that week. I worked at a club in St Simons that Davis and Mark Love designed so I knew them that way, plus I worked briefly with Jack Lumpkin (DL3's teacher). When I qualified, I made a phone call and left a message for both. Mark called me an hour later and said I was all set for Tuesday.
