In your opinion? I’m saying once every 6 holes or as needed if I’m on tour. Currently I try to play the same ball the entire round whenever possible.

I stop playing a ball once it has a blemish on it. Could be six holes, or could be one hole if I hit a cart path or hit a long wedge that tears up the cover.

I never drive a ball that’s beat up; you can pick up significant spin that can take a ball way offline.

I typically swap out a ball three times a round. More typically, I lose it before it’s a factor anyway.

The pros; they’ll get rid of a ball once it’s cover is worn. Again, there’s no telling when that is. Most likely more often than a regular hacker like us. They’ll definitely be more sensitive to any variations in the ball from play.

I pretty much play the same ball the whole round more times than not. If I hit a tree or cart paths that scuffs it I’ll switch. Every now and then if I really have to spin a wedge it’ll scuff it some and I’ll switch. Of course if if i lose it I’ll switch. The most I go through in a normal round at my home course though is 2 unless it’s just one of those days.

I think the pros can only have 6 balls on the , no?

I switch after I lose a ball or get a blemish. Blemish balls go in to the water ball pouch for when I’m playing tight holes and don’t want to lose a good one.

Why would they have a limit on how many balls you can carry? They may only carry a few to cut weight in the bag but there's no limit.

No limit on how many they can carry. Most carry around 9. I would have thought they would carry more than that since they would switch whenever there is a blemish or cut considering the amount of spin they put on the ball.

I switch if I scuff it up bad on a cart path or tree but more often than not it's because it went for a swim.

I carried the sign in New Orleans for a bunch of groups.

Id leave the course with pockets full of balls players would give me during the round.

Sabbatini ripped the cover off the ball with wedges.

Any times any player would hit a wedge, they'd replace the ball before teeing off on the next hole.

Sabbatini went through at least 6 balls. Prob more like 8.

Most will play a ball 2-3 holes. If a bogey is made, that ball is coming out of play.

I think knowing handicaps for this question helps, as a high handicap probably doesn’t care about blemishes so much.

I’m a 7, and really I don’t switch unless the ball is really cut or messed up. A little blemish doesn’t bother me, I figure it is just as likely to help a bad shot be better as it is make a good shot worse

Mostly, I don’t think I compress the ball enough for it to be THAT much of a factor (my 150yd club is a 9 iron).

I’ve played with scratch golfers who play with balls they find in creeks or whatever else is laying around and hit it fine, I’ve also played with 15 handicaps who only play brand new balls of the same type and they still suck

I’ve always heard the pros change balls anytime they hit a wedge.

I saw a study that said, “if the scuff is bigger than a dime” we should definitely replace the ball.

“ good rule of thumb is that if there’s enough damage that you can feel it when rubbing your finger over the ball, it’s probably best to toss it in the shag bag before it impacts your score.”

back in the balata days, the long hitters could hit a ball out of round on a single hole and it was common to replace a ball every hole or two.

These days, who knows. Ball technology is so much better now than it was 20+ years ago.

I played a Bridgestone RBX XS for 18 holes and that thing was still awesome the next round out. I think it ended up going 24 holes before I lost it. I even hit a tree with it and it didn't scuff. How a ball can be that durable, long AND insane amounts of spin blows my mind.

Define "switch"?

It's rare that I finish a round with the same ball, but it's often due to the ball being lost in the woods or taking an unplanned swim.

Well yea, I feel like a dime sized scuff is a HUGE scuff right?

Certainly.

The point is that a pinpoint fleck of a scuff is not going to change the performance of the ball in any meaningful way.

I usually take it out of play IF it is 5mm or more. Most of the time it’s a tree or cart path issue.

As far as balls recovered from water hazards, a study showed a few hours in pond changes nothing, but a day can change the core. I play them if they can be wiped clean with a towel.

Here’s a question for all of you guys. We all like to blame the ball when it is scuffed or weathered and we hit a bad shot, I know I am sometimes guilty of this although I try not to be…

Have you ever heard anyone credit a bad ball for a poorly hit shot turning out good? It’s got to help you as often as it hurt you unless you are a close to scratch golfer.

Unless my ball gets beat up by the cart path I seldom change it. I’ve been lucky the past few rounds I’ve only lost 1 or 2 balls.
Now that I’ve said this the golf gods will guarantee that I go through a box of them next round.
