Sad to see about atchafalaya. Not sure what it would take to get conditions back.

I won't be back there ever, but I do hope they can get it back at some point

Isn’t the condition a result of the parish discontinuing the subsidies given to the course? I remember that being a topic a few years ago.

100K per month for payroll and expenses. That must include a restaurant/grille too right???

20 years ago $500k wasn’t a big maintenance budget for 18 holes. Wages has gone up. Fertilizer has gone up by 3x and fuel was extremely high until last year or so.

I can believe $100k a month expenses easily. With pro shop and cart staff.

That's right. But I guess I remember talking about this story which discussed it losing money for 11 years and looking for a management company. They must have voted to eventually just spend less on maintenance.

After moving back to kc it is crazy how poor the Public golf is in Louisiana. I play courses up here that are anywhere from $35 - $65 for morning 18 hole tee times on the weekends that are better kept and better layouts than what you see in south Louisiana.

because everything "public" in Louisiana sucks. Even the nicest public facilities pale in comparison to most other states. The reasons are too numerous to list, but its not limited to golf. Its everything public in this state. golf, roads, schools, parks, public transportation, boat launches...you name it. IF its public in Louisiana, its gonna suck compared to just about anywhere else.

That’s the brutal truth.

Part of the problem in Louisiana is we have goat ranches charging 45 dollars for 18 holes.

There’s no reason the nicer courses are gonna charge that 45 when places that have weeds all over the greens are at that price point.

The problem (at least in Southeast LA) isn’t so much the nice courses cost too much, it’s that the shitty ones drive the prices higher.

Bruh, this hit my hard but it’s so true. We are the worst at almost everything. I love it here and i can’t leave the gulf for too long due to fishing and outdoor stuff but we are the legit worst. Yet we still have to pay like we’re not absolute dog shitt at everything.

Louisiana is a low standards type of place. “That’s good enough” has to be the most common phrase around here. Carter had a good thing going but they may have caught the low standard disease.

It really is a mindset amongst the citizens. I’m just not sure if people have such low standards that they don’t demand better, or they have no baseline and never expect/demand better. From their kids education to public rest stops, this state is truly unique in its acceptance of low rate, low class, piss poor services.

And I’m not hating on Louisiana, I’m just calling a spade a spade. It saddens me to go other places and see what we could/should have but don’t.

I enjoyed my two years in Louisiana, there’s good people down there that deserve better but they’re dragged down by the lazy crowd, crooked politicians, and PI attorneys. You’re right in that it trickles down to public golf. Take Swope Memorial up here in KC for instance. It’s an AW Tillinghast municipal course that is in solid condition and on the weekend at its peak in the mornings is $52. The same course in Louisiana is probably $70. Granted I think Missouri is lowkey one of the better states when it comes to golf value but still.

All these courses need money and right now its in tight supply....everybody wants country club conditions with goat ranch muni green fees....shite doesn't work like that....my neighbor owns a golf course it costs him $100,000/month out of his pocket...in addition to the 6 million he's spent in capital improvements in last 2 1/2 years...

Is your neighbor Mike Maraist?

if so give him Icegator337's regards. Le Triomphe is in fantastic condition

I play carter weekly and I think it’s improved greatly over the past few months. You get what you pay for, it’s never going to look like fallen oak.
