I’m totally self-taught . My best round ever of 76 came at LSU’s old goat ranch and I’m just starting to play again because my son loves the game ?

Every week I think I’ve found the secret, go out there and then score 100..but it’s always that one hole you birdie or or that keeps you coming back

Not always.
Only thing I know, is I can score bad in many different ways.
I can chunk a chip, scull a pitch, pull a drive left OB, 3 putt several times, and on and on. All in the same round. But I always want to play again. I need to remember that my best is a small fraction of my golf. The worst seems to pop up more often than the best. Still it is way better than working.

Many years ago when we first got married my wife bought me a 6 lesson package from the pro at the club I belonged to then (old Willowdale). I had been pretty much self taught and the lessons did correct a few things for me. The biggest thing was practicing a lot to get better. I'm 64 and probably going to get a driver specific lesson to try to get back some lost yardage, I've been hitting the fairway very consistently but I need to gain some yardage or else it's time to move up the the senior tees.

I need to focus more on my body in the swing instead of the arms.. I address the ball and have a thousand things to focus on it seems, then I screw up.
The other day on one hole I get a pretty good drive, then nail a 7 iron on the green..
Then one the next hole hit my driver 150 and then top or take a divot behind the ball.. and it’s like I do t know what I did different between the 2

I’m 41 and have never had a lesson. I started playing at 11 when we moved to Shenandoah. A year after the move I started homeschooling. I finished school around noon and then I walked to the golf course and played a round and hit balls until dark everyday. On weekends I would wake up and go to the course all day. By the time I got to high school I was a low single digit handicap. Lessons will certainly help but getting out there and playing will help a ton in the beginning. I’m just getting back into playing regularly but I can still shoot 80-85 playing only once or twice a year and if I play regularly I can dip into the 70’s. I mentioned to my wife after I got new clubs that I wanted to take some lessons to refine my swing so she got lessons for me for Christmas.

it is...but while guys are hitting 7 irons into the green from the men's tees I'm hitting a 5 hybrid in from the senior tees...

Replying to OP, but this is just a tangent.
Am the only one who doesn’t believe people when they talk golf scores? I’ve seen too many people rehit bad shots, not count penalties correctly, or take gimme putts. They’ll turn around and say they shot whatever score and legitimately believe it counts.

I love that life.
I hit last. Then first to the green.
I play up in club events. Nobody cares since I’m not a big hitter. The big hitters tell me for them playing up brings a lot more trouble into play.
I’m only up because it got to where I have 5 wood on most par 3s. The pro told me to move up to where I was hitting par3s with mostly irons and par 4 approaches with mostly irons.
It is more fun. I’m not making a living at this.

I frequently get paired with people I don’t know. Breakfast ball is common with them, me too if i haven’t had time to get loose. I tell them to hit an extra if they feel like it anytime they feel like it and if they want to pick up a two footer rather than putt it again, so what?
They’re out there to relax and enjoy themselves for a few hours. Let them. Whatever their real handicap is will show up when they’re playing in a tournament or for money.

I really don’t. Just saying that I take it with a grain of salt when someone is bragging about scores.

Guilty of that too.

65 yo lifetime 12/14 here. My dad taught me to play in the 60’s. “No right hand” “Let your shoulder bring your chin up “ RIP Dad I’ve always been an above average athlete with good hand to eye coordination. My short game was everything for years made pars from hell alll day .I’ve evolved thru the years to being a much better ball striker thanks to new technology. I’ve never taken a formal lesson, I know immediately upon hitting bad shot what went wrong in my swing. Self correction is essential to playing decently . Golf is the greatest game ever played.
