re: Skipping holes to jump ahead of a group when it’s packed.

Was playing in a group of 4 on a weekend one time. On each hole you had at least two groups, and sometimes 3 on a hole (bad course management that day). The group behind us decided to skip ahead of us to the par 3 and there was a group on the green, and a group on the tee box while we were putting on our hole. By the time we got done with the par 4, the group that skipped us was waiting for the green to clear ahead of them. That was the closest I've come to getting in a fight on the golf course. After we got into an argument with them, they went ahead and tee'd off, we let them go, but as soon as they were done putting, I put one about 10' behind a guy walking off. I guess they decided to not be in front of us anymore after that because they moved on to somewhere else. I usually am not interested in hitting into people but I made the exception after the dude jawed off to us.

If you think a 6 some can play as fast as two threesomes you’re a moron… a 6 some will take 5+ hours to play and two threesomes will finish in under 4

Seems pretty dumb to skip a hole. I paid to play 18, why would I let someone being slow make me skip a hole? Unless I have to go somewhere which I don’t since I block 6 hours off for golf just in case.

Two thoughts
1. Probably a group of 6 that wanted to play together and joined up, you’re kind of a dick for calling the pro shop and not talking to them first
2. I’d be interested in some data on whether a group of 6 plays slower than 2 groups of 3. Would they finish slower than the 2nd of the 2 groups? On a crowded day I’m guessing no

You get that a lot with wedding parties

because my enjoyment of golf is exponentially reduced when I have to wait for some slapdicks who are completely oblivious to everyone else.
I'm not talking about legit slow play cause someone is a hacker and hitting errant shots. I'm talking about watching some dude line up a putt from eight different angles only to miss the shot. and then repeat the process two more times. Or, as posted earlier, palyers taking the same shot two and three times. I've experienced that at Beaver Creek on a few occasions. Its not that big of a deal on a slow midweek afternoon with a light crowd, but its horseshite when the course is packed like on a weekend or holiday.

Imagine… Playing in your normal Saturday/Sunday game with your buddies. Hitting your last few shots on the range and seeing that nobody has tee’d off on #1 tee box in 45 min thinking this is going to be a fun enjoyable round.
Oh no here comes a group of 5 (speculate who if you want) from the clubhouse… *please turn to go to the range, please turn to go to the range…*. They continue straight to the tee box.. F@#$!!!!!
5 1/2 hour round. My life.

I’m prob in the minority, but nothing is fun about racing through a round of golf, dodging groups, playing through multiple times, constantly trying to get out of others way, scheming to not get behind a group that may or may not be slow.
I just relax and expect the worse and plan accordingly.
It does piss me off though if we’ve had a smooth pace going, make the turn, and some jackasses jumped on the back 9 and totally f’ed up the pace of play for everyone that’s been out there. I will say something in this scenario if all of a sudden I’m stuck behind a pink shirt or white belt.

We skipped a group yesterday. We were behind them for 6 holes and waited an abnormally long time. They were very slow. We even took a break at the clubhouse to give them some time to get ahead and were still waiting on the box at 12. Eventually, we skipped them and then went back to play the hole we skipped and still finished before them.
Some people just don't have course awareness. I try to take that into account as I'm a pretty quick player but yesterday was a big problem. On a busy day, play ready golf and be ready to go as soon as you can. These guys were looking in the water together for more than a couple minutes and then they each had to then find their ball and hit it.

racing through a round of golf,
I don’t like to play slow, however, I don’t like running to every shot either.
I like to look at putts. Slope, grain, and distance. I probably look to long sometimes, but even I don’t go to all 4 sides.
I try to get below the line and then behind the ball. If I'm not away, sometimes the really fast guys will go first. It does not bother me, but sometimes I finish putting, pull ball out of hole, and hear my group’s tee shot as im walking off the green. Guess I need to pick up the pace or putt better.

I learned a long time ago,it’s best to sit by a smoker and drink, beer on summer holidays than try to play golf.

I don’t disagree that it’s horse shite and it is annoying when it’s someone doing dumb shite. However, I’m out in the elements on the course and unless I have a time crunch I’m just gonna chill out have a smoke and wait. If they piss me off that bad I’ll ask to play through and if they say no, I might consider bombing one into them.
I’m still not going to skip a hole that I paid for because of others.
I get it though I will lose my shite on waits any other time but on the course I just chill.

I figured this thread would be the place to add this as well. We played the Peninsula Club on Sunday which is Arnold Palmer's first course. Really tight and and you have to be able shape your shots to do anything there. The group in front of us was playing from the tips and they had no business doing so. This is a tough course to begin with and will beat up seasoned golfers, never mind the once or twice a year crowd. These guys trying to play from the back was just awful and held up several groups. I don't see how they even had fun, if they had played from the whites they still would've struggled but it would have been a bit quicker.
I wish courses would make a better effort to get people to play from the tees that best suits them. It would make the pace of play better and I think people would have more fun. I golf all the time and I know I have no reason to shoot from the tips and it doesn't bother me at all.

Memorial Day weekend was packed. Was slow all day, the foursome in front of me had just teed off on 8 and 0 shots were in the fairway, I didn’t mind waiting but could tell it was going to be a min, the group at the next hole had finished up so I just skipped.

You’ve said this twice
Has it crossed your mind that you can go back and play the hole you skipped?

I'm not saying this is impossible, but it seems like you may take more time to do this than just waiting. Also, how does that work with other players on the course? Maybe the course is empty enough to do it, but if there are people on the hole when you come back to it, you may end up in the same situation as before.

If the course is so packed that you can’t go back and play the hole/holes you skipped then you never had the opportunity to skip to begin with

I think it's almost always just ignorance. The genuine kind. Courses should put a sign on #1 box that gives some sort of guide. Either shot distance based (I've found the well struck 5 iron carry distance times 36 method to be fairly accurate) or handicap based. Some would ignore it, but many would probably learn something and use it.

Sometimes guys are just having a bad day. If a player is slow, he’s slow wherever he plays from.
I play the ‘one ups’ but I’m not going to move up to the ladies tees just because I’m a little off that day. However, I do have respect for the people around me.
Whether a guy is playing from the tips or whites, it doesn’t stop that old man that spends 10 minutes fishing balls out the lake or the hacker taking 7 practice swings at every setup or the assbag that has to line his putt up from every direction just to have to do it all over again 3 times because he sucks.
