So about 8 days ago, I wake up with a stinging pain in my left shoulder blade/scapula and my left arm feels like I threw 3 complete games in one day. Dull pain in my tricep/bicep/forearm and some tingling in my ring and middle finger. Then pain and stiffness in my neck and trapezius. Also lots of small muscle twitching and spasms in my arm and traps area.

Had a massage last Wednesday with no relief and have been popping ibuprofen and naproxen like candy with little relief, but it allowed me to sleep.

Anyway, finally was able to go to a walk-in clinic this morning and took X-rays and it definitely shows something abnormal between C5-6. Having an MRI done this afternoon to find out more.

So if it’s a damn herniated disc, what are my options? I definitely don’t want to have surgery on my neck. Have heard many horror stories about neck surgeries.

Thanks in advance.

Had similar issue. Saw Choiroptactor and did decompression on neck. After 5 sessions, good as new.

For the love of God please go see an Orthopedist and stop taking clinical direction from an urgent care.

Yep. For me it’s the C6/C7 discs. Also felt a pop in my neck while sleeping that woke me up in pain.

Surgery is the best option, but you can take physical therapy which is what I did. Took a long time to regain full strength in my left arm. Every so often it’ll flare up again.

I had a similar injury from jiu jitsu a few years back. got x-rays taht showed "something abnormal" as well, but never got an MRI. i got a bunch of musclular atrophy on my right side (mainly in my tricep and pectoral). i had tingling in my ring and little finger. i did what most Marines do (which is dumb), and just stretched a bunch, took a bunch of motrin, and gradually continued my regular exercise as I was able. eventually the pain subsided and muscle came back. i can still slightly feel it on my right side if i angle my head a certain way, but it's much less acute than it was. the first two or three weeks were pretty damn painful, and i could hardly hold my head up.

i had some bulging of disc with impingement into spinal cord between 3 and 4, or maybe 4-5, cant remember exactly. Was 10 years ago Similar symptoms to you but doesnt sound like it was as painful.

Did a steroid injection into that space and did rehab for about 2-3 months. worked itself out. Hopefully yours is minor and can follow a similar plan without surgery.

I had a fusion on C5-C6 about 10 years ago. It was nothing compared to the two level fusion that I had done on my back last year.

Well I just wanted an opinion on what the hell was causing it before going that route. And besides, it usually takes up to a week or more to get an appointment with an Orthopedic doc and I needed some relief today. I was fricking miserable the last several days while I was out of town working.

PA gave me a shot of Toradol and something else, a 6 day steroid pack, Tramadol for pain and muscle relaxers.

After I get the results of the MRI, I’ll probably go to and Orthopedic doc if it is a herniated disc.

C4-C7 with 5 and 6 being the worst.

I did PT and had steroid shots. After a year of no relief I said frick it and just live with it now. Kinda cool to not feel your extremities.

There’s no way I can live with this pain. It feels like a stinger almost constantly.

And with my job, I can’t continuously take pain killers.

Had a fusion from C3-C6 almost 3 years ago. Had no feeling in my hands and now have about 95%. The only thing that was problematic was my esophogus felt like I had a golf ball in it for about a month. They retract the esophagus to get to the disc if going through the front of your neck.

Same here. Doctor said I needed surgery. Wife said I need shots.

Found a good chiropractor. A few weeks and have been relatively pain free for 10 years

You can masturbate with your non-feeling hand and pretend it is someone else.

Nobody WANTS to have surgery. Not all surgeries are the same. These cervical surgeries have become routine. Go talk to a good doctor who is highly recommended and one you trust. Don’t come here looking for serious advice. Too many people just looking to instill fear in you. I’ve had 9 surgeries. Didn’t WANT to do any of them. Do what needs to be done. Grow a pair and deal with it.

Damn Devil, we could be clones except you are an Aggie. I caught a beast of a dude in a a quick triangle in a jits tournament years ago and before I could control his posture he stacked me like a deck of cards and I felt my neck pop. He then proceeded to literally pick me up and slam me to the mat. My neck was fricked and like you all I did was stretch, iced a bunch, and popped Aleve like candy. The pain was horrific. I ended up having to get an MRI and literally almost passed out in that fricking tube. I had a herniated disk at C3-4. I got a shot. Waste of money. Lost all my strength in my right side. Rolling was a joke. I quit training for almost 8 months. I ended up doing an arse load of table decompression with an ortho. And lots of icing every day. Took about a year to even get close to maybe 80% of where I was before.

Go to the Ortho BEFORE the MRI, not after.

Well I imagine an Ortho is just going to tell me to get an MRI also, so what’s the difference?

That is exactly what will happen. The Ortho can't tell shite honestly without an MRI. Then he will probably get you to a pain management doc that will want to give you a shot.

Yeah, I don’t know why LSUfan4444 is so adamant about an Ortho.

What kind of shot? Cortisone, epidural?
