Guys, I feel miserable. I’ve been working an insane amount of hours through the summer and stressed out about a ton of stuff and I just feel like shite. I want to start some light calisthenics type workouts and running. I’m not looking to shred, I just want to get moving around more and have a little stress outlet.

Mornings aren’t really possible. I’m already up at 0345 daily to get to work. This would have to be an evening thing. Is it better to do this right after work, or wait until after dinner? My work day is about 530-530, so I’m already home pretty late. Add to kids schedules and my relax time typically doesn’t start til 830-900 pm. Is that too late to be effective? I’ve got to do something.

Any help or ideas would be awesome.

I’d say stop trying to be perfect about the timing. Pick a time that works best for you each day and stick to it. I’d say even if it’s a 30 minute brisk walk or a 15-20 minute two mile jog. Start to build on that momentum and get back to a good place.

Do you have any time at lunch? Easiest way to make it stick is to find a time everyday and set it in stone. Your brain will always find some excuse to put it off until you get it locked in.

Get a different job. That's way too much working in my book.

I had to take my lunch break to go workout because the baby doesn't have a sleep schedule and that ruined my 5am workouts and after work is too hectic.

Good thing for me, my clinic is right around the corner from my gym. So a solid hour workout is very feasible.

For people with small kids that get off work after 5:00, early morning or lunch is ideal.

Also if you just want to move more, maybe you could go for walks around the neighborhood with the kid(s) after work.

That’s a tough question, just really wanted to post to offer support to you. You’re making a lot of sacrifices for your family and deserve kudos.

Could you get in a thirty minute workout at 8:30 and still get to bed by 9:30 for roughly six hours of sleep? And then maybe try to get a nap at lunchtime.

When my kids were little, we used to do Wii Fit, so a little workout mixed with family time. I think that kind of stuff is a good idea when possible, as a stress relief that you won’t guilt trip over (though you shouldn’t guilt trip for working out).

If it was me, and I couldn’t for whatever reason have a full power rack and everything, I would still get a barbell, bumper plates, and maybe a couple heavy kettlebells and do like a thirty minute workout that used deadlifts, power cleans, goblet squats, presses, chin-ups, etc. You could do that three days a week and get a good long walk on the other days.

I do pretty much all of my workouts during the week after 9PM. It will be hard to run that late unless you have access to a treadmill, but I do spin classes at least 4 days a week on our Peloton. 45 minutes 3x a week during the week, and throw a 60/75/90 minute class in on the weekends. I don't want to get burned out, so I ride every other day, and do strength workouts 3-4 days a week. Start out slow, get at least a half hour in a few days a week, then you can ramp it up some. Something is better than nothing, so even starting at a half hour of walking/running will help.

Some people say they can't do that and get to sleep afterwards, but I rarely have a problem going to sleep. You can get plenty done between 8:30 and 9:30 every night. I've been doing it over a year and a half now on that schedule.
