I have a confession to make. I haven’t started any seeds yet. And I’m not going to. I’ve had a ridiculously busy winter and all of this just completely got away from me.
I’m going to buy transplants from my local garden center and keep it simple this spring. I’ve noticed as my kids get older I get busier.

That's my usual, and I only start seeds of things I cannot find at the local places. One cucumber variety, Jimmy Nardello and that blue squash the borers love.

My wife will be starting tomato and pepper seeds in a few weeks. These will be under a grow light.
I put 13-13-13 fertilizer in her existing beds yesterday prior to getting some rain. Once the garden soil comes on sale at Lowes/Home Depot I will start filling up her three new raised beds. Where we live at in NW Arkansas the ground is to hard to to many rocks. She now will have two 4'x8' beds, three 4' rings and one 3' ring plus five 5 gallon bags.
She will be planting onion starts in the bags soon also. The bags will be on a heavy duty wagon where I can bring them inside the garage when the temperature gets to low.

That’s the truth. Savor it buddy. Mine are 17 and have one more year at home before going off to college. I’ve already warned the gophers they only have one more year before they get the brunt of my attention.
2 rows of potatoes went in yesterday and today. Red Lasoda, Red Pontiac, White Kennebec, Yukon gold, and little purple ones for my wife. At least the boy unloaded the bags of compost, soil, and mulch for me.

I have about 10 tomatoes seeded out and under a light. I have about 15 different peppers soaking and on a seed heater.
Like Pillage, I'll probably dial it back a little this year.

Why do you have them soaking?

Softens the hard outer coating, speeds up germination, improves germination rate.

Got some carrots and lettuce planted Friday and started cleaning out the other beds. My onions, rosemary, lavender, parsley and thyme all survived the -1 temps without being covered. So I got that going for me.

I have cucumber and okra up in seed tray with heating pad and light

I started my usual dwarf tomatoes and peppers, but literally none of my Jimmy Nardello seedlings germinated. I think my seed packet got wet or something. Pretty bummed considering they're my favorite peppers.
Like you, I'll be buying a lot of peppers from the coop.

I loaded and unloaded 60 1cf bags of garden soil today. As I was finishing up someone from Lowes walked up to see if I needed any help. He made a comment that he hopes he could do this when he is 74 years old.

Just a heads up. Projected lows in mid-30s here in Vermilion on Sunday and Monday night. If y’all stuck tomatoes in the ground already prepare to dust off the old tarp. One good thing about trellising tomatoes - you can just throw a tarp over the whole trellis and put some 2x4s on the ground the keep it in contact with the ground.

Just ordered cucumber seeds, as I cannot find seeds or plants here of the minis.

In my case I was referring to the seeds sitting in wet peat pellets on a seed mat.
Lets hope this is the last cold snap of the year.

Next time, just get a bulk delivery from Creeks Nursery or Garden City.

My potatoes are starting to sprout. Do I need to be worried about a low of 31 in BR??
Posted on 2/21/26 at 7:41 pm to Trout Bandit
I guess I am behind as I haven't even decided what to plant at my home in Houma

Cover the sprouts with dirt or the freezing temp will kill the sprout. The seed potato will send up others, but you’ll be a few weeks behind.

How are y'all growing potatoes? Bags, buckets, beds? I have some ready to put in the dirt but can't decide how I want to do them.
