Dear Friends,
Our garden is coming along splendidly this year, thanks to God's blessing, Mother's hard work, and this miraculous weather. Mother calls a temperate early Summer a Pilgrim Summer, having been influenced by those in the Northeast who call warm Autumnal weather an Indian Summer. To walk in one's garden and see the fruits on one's labor is such a calming and centering and accomplished feeling. I think many of our mental health problems would be ameliorated if people stepped away from their phones, video games, and television and stepped into nature, where we belong, at least part of the time.
Friends, what a beautiful evening it is. The air is a bit drier than it normally is in June. There is a slight breeze, and that relaxing background hum from the cicada, crickets, katydids, or whoever is part of that natural chorus, puts my heart at rest. The only thing missing are lightning bugs, are as some call them, fire flies. I had never seen a lightning bug until we traveled to a seafood restaurant deep into the Northshore in the early '90s. They are such beautiful creatures, letting their light shine, just as God calls us to do. Whenever we go to North Carolina in the summer, one of my most favorite things to do is catch lightning bugs and collect them in a mason jar. Our tradition is to compete to see who can catch the most in seven minutes. Do not worry -- we have holes in the top lids and we let them all go as soon as we count them. We have not lost one yet.
Our garden is an act of worship and prayer. As I have aged I find myself more and more enjoying submerging my hands into the dirt and feeling the elemental source of my being. God has worked wonders from this dirt and invites us too to participate in the creative act with gardening. We have been for several years working on a labyrinth garden and it is beginning to show its colorful form this year. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures from tonight.
The yarrow flower is the most wondrous tightly packed present, almost like a Christmas stocking stuffed to overflowing. They are just now bursting forth with flowers. Beautiful!
Mother thinks we have an infestation of birds because she sees budding blackberries in the garden everyday, but in the evening, when she goes to pick them, she finds they are all gone. I do not have the heart to tell her I am the one eating them all.
The beebalms peaked earlier this week, and they are still so majestic.
I hope each of you has had a bounty of beauty in your gardens this season. Please pray for our dear friend, PJ or dukke v, whose wife is in the hospital now.
Faith, Hope, and Love,
TulaneLSU

That’s a flower bed, not a garden.

Friend,
Ignorance is no sin, but letting one walk in ignorance without reproving would be. Let us consult with The Oxford English Dictionary, the authority on the words of the English language. I use a compact edition from 1985, its 24th printing. It has a Bausch and Lomb magnifying glass I find the need to use more and more frequently.
The first definition of garden, according to the OED:
The word's first printed use comes from 1028 and confirms an area filled with flowers. Chaucer used the word several centuries later also to refer to a space of flowers.

I spy milkweed.
My family enjoys our "garden" with butterflies more than vegetables, so we now run 80% of ours dedicated to butterflies only. I gotta say, the little maintenance and joys of my kids faces with butterflies makes me enjoy it more than vegetables as well.
Glad you are back, friend.

Dear friend,
I must express my heartfelt appreciation for the enchanting photographs you have shared, capturing the ethereal beauty of your garden. The delicate petals, resplendent colors, and the harmonious symphony of nature's elements come together in a tapestry of awe-inspiring grace. It is evident that you and Mother have invested arduous efforts into nurturing this splendid sanctuary, and I commend you both for your unwavering dedication.
Your labor of love has left me truly inspired, and I find myself yearning to embark upon a similar journey of horticultural artistry. Thus, I humbly beseech you for guidance, as I believe you possess the wisdom and experience that can illuminate my path. Please allow me to inquire, in the most eloquent manner possible, how may one best commence this wondrous endeavor?
With profound admiration and sincere gratitude,
GrizzlyAlloy

friend,
i have been babying an indoor lime tree for 5+ years that usually only generates 4 or 5 really juicy limes that go into my end-of-summer margarita and its delicious.
this year i chose to give him a breath of God's fresh air and allow him a place in my backyard.
as a result, the tree is blessing me with so many budding limes that its taken my breath away. i hope i can keep him soaked down enough so they all grow into golf-ball and beyond sized limes and allow many refreshing drinks by the pool this summer.

every place and any place can be a garden, beauty often finds its own way. Here are wildflowers (Mexican hats and black eyed Susan’s) growing at one of our construction sites

Gardening is rewarding and calming. It will lower your blood pressure (they say). There's connection in it.
