Saban could have assembled a staff to be great at this. He would’ve struggled with not being able to keep kids that he in invested time with. Basically re-coaching kids.

Saban pushed Lane to LSU, so he's currently on my good side. LOL

Nah. I'm not thinking he has the energy to do it at the same level as Lane.

He couldn’t do any of what Lane is doing right now. CLK was THE best choice.

Obviously the transfer portal didn’t exist, but recruiting wise this is exactly what Saban did with the REC and Dodge Chargers. They were far superior to any other school in organization (bagmen) and funding. Now that the money is legal and in the open, other schools boosters are giving more freely.

That’s why Saban quit. His advantage was gone. He failed in the NFL when on a level playing field.

Support staff is huge now as well. Identifying players at value is the game now.

If Saban were still at Bama the money would be flowing and elite players would still commit for chance at natty. Don’t get twisted Saban is THE dog.

Saban showed the ability to adjust what he focused on multiple times. He just didn’t want to anymore. I don’t blame him.

Saban would have struggled with the portal too because Texas Tech and Miami could outbid Alabama for players.

if the portal and NIL was as significant as it is now for saban's career, he wouldn't have stayed at bama.

he would have gone to a school that had the name and the money to outbid

The deal-making that is part of the NIL culture is definitely a different skill set and Saban, I'm sure, found it unpleasant. He is a program-building, high standard, devoted to excellence coach and one needs to do more now. Kiffin has the deal-making skill set and looks to be in the top 5 coaches with that skill.

We will see if the skills Kiffin has translates into championships before college football changes again. Even without the NIL aspect, Kiffin seems to have grown into a championship-level coach.

Yeah, he would have actually took the Texas job and not just flirted with them in order to get a raise.

Saban was playing this recruiting game long before anyone else.

If folks could pick a 50 year old Nick Saban vs. 50 year old Lane Kiffin, I'm betting the vote would be at least 80% Saban.

I've said this for years. The GOAT wasn't really the GOAT, he just had Dodge Chargers and $$ for his recruits, and never had the NCAA up his arse.

I get what you're saying, but isn't working the system to stack every possible advantage in your favor part of the equation? You could argue that there are many coaches that would have success if they had the same advantages that he had, but he was the one who created those advantages and sustained them.

Before Lane was hired some people here wanted Saban. Then I saw a video of Saban on his birthday sitting on his Lazy Boy recliner with legs propped up and a blanket over them. I thought to myself that he looked like my grandfather. Wow he looks old I thought.

I’m so glad that Saban didn’t want to coach. We have a turbocharged relentless coach that we were lucky to get. I can’t wait for what is to come.
