They have 48 hours to comply
Whatever legal agreement they have with Williams has zero bearing on NCAA rules.
Their endgame here seems to be delaying his release so he can't enroll at LSU or wherever else for the spring semester.

I doubt it. I think if the roles were reversed we’d be pissed and calling him a bunch of names but the reality is that there isn’t any rules binding kids to teams and there shouldn’t be. Everywhere else is a free labor market. Let kids do what they want.

What are they going to do, lock him in a room and never let him go anywhere?

but I think the Huskies hold the cards in this chess match. He may not be happy but he's not going to be willing to sit out a year.
Any contract can be broken. The question is what will the damages be. The damage could be significant to Williams (and indirectly to LSU), but the damage to UW’s reputation in future recruiting will be more signicant, especially concerning top players. It will be a pyrrhic victory for UW, but a “victory” in name only. As others have pointed out, UW will also take a de facto loss in the short term, paying $4M for a disgruntled player who will do everything in his power to avoid injury before declaring for the 2027 NFL Draft. So even if UW “wins” the case, they will be without Williams’s talent in the 2026 season and they will be bereft of highly-talented players in the future to enforce their victory upon. “STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.”

They will commit a violation to make a point?
And he will just enroll in LSU anyway. There is no way to stop him from doing it.

What exactly is UW's play here? It sucks, but what's the end game? Force a kid that does not want to play for your school to play for your school?
yeah, that's what i'm not understanding about their stance... at best, you force the kid to not play a year of football, b/c he's not going to agree to play for the university...and would you want your starting QB to be begrudgingly playing anyway? you really think he's gonna give you his best, if he were to actually be forced to remain and play?
Washington doesn't have a leg to stand on, and they know it, but they are going to do everything possible to make it uncomfortable for everyone involved... and i get it... i'd be pissed to, if the shoe were on the other foot...but at the end of the day, the institutions have absolutely ZERO leverage in these situations.... welcome to the new world, Washington

agree with them. The portal is BS. Pay for play. Signed contracts? Kids need to be held accountable
Accountable for what?
What are the damages?

This could be an interesting case. Is it truly a contract? And is there a notice period in the contract such as one year, and are there any terms that the player agreed to which commits him to be enrolled at WU and on the team for a certain period. Is pay to play involved in the language?
It is my understanding it is a contract.
The “contract” Xavier Lucas signed at Wisconsin last year before transferring to Miami was technically a two-year MOU agreement.
When Lucas signed his agreement the NIL landscape was in even more flux than now. Everyone was guessing on the specifics of the NIL House Settlement. The legal use of a Memorandum of Understanding instead of a contract gave the Big Ten and Wisconsin some wiggle room to make adjustments to the NIL agreements if needed depending on the specifics of the House Settlement.
Every report I’ve seen states that the MOUs used last year are almost identical to the contracts currently in use. Both specifically state the agreement is NOT pay-for-play.

I think if they had signed a binding contract (probably any contract), there would be a lot of folks calling for LSU to sue him and be petty.

Undoubtedly. Add in saying he wasn't that good, etc.

Agreed, they may pass some rules regarding multi-year contracts, binding them to a school. However, as I understand it, currently, these contracts are not part of the framework of eligibility as defined by the NCAA, and so they can't be enforced by the NCAA. The only route would be for the school to sue in civil court.
vil court.
