It sounds great, but I’m not sold on the ability of our secondary just yet. I’ll temper my expectations for now.

Absolute no.1 takeaway from LSU fall practices! Is that people need to temper their expectations

This is the exact thinking of fans in 2019, but for a different reason. LSU’s schedule was considered so brutal that only an idiot would predict a failing coach at Ole Miss could lead LSU to the playoffs. I look at this season as if nothing is off the table!

Yep I could see anywhere from 6-6 to 11-1 being a possibility this year. Personally, I'd consider 9-3 without one of the losses being A&M to be a successful season

Our DL will be solid but I don’t love any other position. With a mobile QB and a few stud WRs it’s not hard to gameplan against the front 7.

Kelly said a couple days ago that our secondary is probably the biggest surprise. He said at 1st they thought they had 2 serviceable Cbs. Now it looks like they have 4 that are of SEC caliber and 2 more that will be able to rotate in.

Sure, there is a lot of optimism going into this season, and rightfully so. But, let’s be realistic here. LSU isn’t competing for their division, let alone an actual championship, this year. This is a foundational year for Kelly to establish his vision for LSU in the near future. Anything over 8 wins this year should be regarded as a major turnaround and warrant a CoY candidacy. This team was completely GUTTED by the end of the season. Save for a handful of guys, this roster was rebuilt from the ground up. There’s no familiarity anywheres, which takes a few games to establish. The FSU game will be a good indication where the Tigers are as a program.

Absolutely everyone here on the Rant was praising the Dline. When the offense Kelly has invested heavily shows it’s metal, suddenly we may have a bad Dline. This place is a comedy show, a laugh a minute.

As it applies to the topic of position groups, I literally can not remember one post suggesting this years D-line is not a strength. 90% of those posts mentioned linebackers and defensive backs as a weakness.

If this offense cant move the ball against our own back seven, we are in for a long season.

Overall health of team seems improved....not a lot of nagging injuries keeping guys off the practice field

and played a bowl game with 39 scholarship players. I've never seen a program gutted like that before.

so, we're rebuilding, not competing for championships.

So true, However, we have about 83 scholarship players now and a host of walk-ons, so about 113 players as a team to practice and get ready for a long SEC season.

Ed O let the program slip to 39 players, and players quitting/opting out, and promoting 3 years then time for NFL, etc. It seemed the locker room sucked with a lot of negativaty. The a-hole Ricks transferred to Bama... What more you need to know of low quality guys Ed O and co. recruited.

We now have a great experienced coach, alignment, and a bunch of quality assistant coaches and coordinators. He also hit the portal for proper CB from Ohio State, Ok. State, UL and DB's from Arkansas, etc. We seem to have just loaded up and you guys talk of the best D Line since 2011. So, why can't we as fans be more optimistic and confident on a fine season- maybe 10 wins, heck why not 11? Its the team that has to stay focused and grounded.. Not us fans! If the season is terrible, then live and learn like the past.

If the OL works together and the QB can play in this league then watch out for LSU THIS YEAR.

Look at the Bengals. They won 4 games, terrible roster, Burrow blew out a knee. The next year they go to the Super Bowl, without fixing their O Line. Now, this year they have brought in vet O Linemen, so should be better. But the point is they went from the outhouse to the penthouse in one year. Many colleges do it year in and year out. Not gut down to 39 scholly players, but we have a full team of 113 now in a matter of months. That is 116 from the roster minus Brennan, Toles and one more. Lets see what happens.

One practice means nothing. If it was everyday, I would get excited. Going to hold off excitement until we beat FSU.

All of these people are watching the same practices but giving different reports.

That’s because reporters are mostly nerds who know little about sports. For example, if Cain is handed the ball, and runs for 15 yards through a gaping hole, most reporters would conclude that Cain is going to be a star. A guy who grew up playing sports is likely to conclude that, while Cain is competent, the offensive line gets the credit (or maybe the defense screwed up).

Jesus relax, I personally think we look good from the practice footage, we have a full team, an elite DL and Wr core on paper, quality depth at every position and a good coach. Sure as a fan I’m riding with the purple shades but if they stink it up for whatever reason lll also be understanding that this is Kelly’s first year in a rebuild.

tRant don't know as much as it thinks it does.

But I've kinda known that forever, and yet, here I am.

One key observation by the media attending practice on Wednesday was this. LSU's offense looked to be out-pacing the defense today; the offensive line continues to surprise in terms of blocking

If this were true, I’d agree that it’s the biggest story if camp. It would immediately add a game or 2 to my expectations.

I don’t believe it. I think you are pumping sunshine.

Fair enough. I’m just going by the fact that the Oline was the biggest concern of Coach Kelly’s when he arrived, and was his biggest focus. An Oline made up of a bunch a transfers, a freshman and lone one Oline man Ware. But based on most media reports, they’re athletic and are not being dominated or intimidated by the Dline. You can describe it however you wish, I just know this my no. 1 take!

The only thing that worries me is the Secondary and LB play

Hopefully the mix of all the transfers and talented underclassmen we can field a pretty good defense
