That’s possible, but we won’t know until he had a decent opportunity to build a roster.
THIS ISNT FOOTBALL. Good roster was built last offseason. This is a year to year deal. I’ll give him 3 MAX to finish Top 5 in the league and make a round 2 game in the tournament or he is out.

He is to Ja Morant what Curley Hallman was to Brett Favre.
And this folks is how a rant narrative is created. This phrase will be repeated a million times.

but like most hs kids they can't make the jump to D1 in year 1
Hard to make the jump when they don't play. Certainly they are not finished products by any means, but you can see flashes of the length and athleticism Ward and Phillips provide when on the court.

It is reasonable to expect some improvement next year.
It is probably equally as reasonable, if not more, to expect they won't be here next season. That's just the nature of the game right now. Even guys who are starters on good teams (Adam Miller) as true Freshman transfer. I hope McMahon can keep all of this year's freshmen as foundational pieces to build on. But it is more likely than not that won't happen.
A coach has to recruit individual teams in college basketball today...not building blocks. You're likely going to see 6, 7, 8 spots open after this season. That's just how it is. Two are (as of now) filled by HS signees. So McMahon will have to get more. Can he get impact players in the portal is TBD.
Last year was a double-edged sword in recruiting. There was a element of the "unknown" McMahon had to deal with. He had never coached at the major-conf. level and there was uncertainty what would become of LSU after Wade's abrupt departure. However, McMahon was just coming off a great season with Murray St and HIS credibility as a coach was high.
That's not the case going into this offseason. The "known" for McMahon at LSU has been a disaster this season. He talked all offseason about wanting to play a fast paced, NBA style offense. He said in his opening press conference he couldn't understand when guys said they wanted to go to a school to be developed into an NBA player, only to go to a school that played games where the score was 48-46. Yet, this year's offense has been EXACTLY that. LSU has struggled to score 50 multiple times.
Before this season he could sell how he coached Ja Morant and to look at how Murray St played when he was there. That pitch has now lost a ton of luster this season because opposing coaches can say "look at how bad LSU looked under him". He now has to defend his "record". All he has to sell is PT and HOPE for better days. That wouldn't be the case if LSU had just been remotely competitive this season. But no reasonable person thought it would be THIS bad.
The three coaches who came before him ALL had positive 1st seasons to try to build upon. As strange as it may sound, it is not unreasonable to say McMahon was in a stronger position in terms of recruiting last offseason than he will be this offseason.

So, Coach K's record his last 2 years at Army and first three years at Duke looked like this:

That's like trying to justify having a terrible computer today by comparing it to computers in the early 80's. Just like computers, college basketball (and college sports in general) has changed DRASTICALLY over the course of 40 years

I haven't understood why we are all up in arms about this basketball team. The NCAA damn near killed our program. McMahon took this job knowing that it would take time. It's not like we were making Final Fours under Wade and we had some of the best talent that money could buy! Give the dude time to get players in here. We're not good, we knew we weren't going to be good, yet most of us seem shocked that we're not good!

We were predicted to finish 8th in the conference, instead we’re going to end up dead last at 1-17 or 2-16 in the SEC, closing in on the worst record in school history. McMahon is doing a terrible job, arguably the worst in the P5 conferences.

It was certainly not an immediate impact hire. In time maybe he can recruit a roster and coach em, but when you have no roster you need an instant imp

He's gotta hit the portal jackpot.

It is also an example of a great coach who started slowly, but grew to be one of the best over time and what a mistake it would have been for Duke to fire him after 2 years on the job.
Maybe college basketball will continue to drastically change and McMahon will be an elite coach in whatever college basketball looks like in 2028.
My point is, McMahon is not going anywhere for the next 2 years at least. It is possible he will get better.
