Let’s all be honest, this defense is a shell of what it used to be and we are average at best on DL and CB.

We will be in shoot-outs this year.

Kelly is trying to fix it, but we are a couple of years out for a true fix on defense.

Interior DL is not the problem… every position group on the defense has many questions. The biggest issue here is that as we know it now there is not one position group on defense that can make up the performance gap of the others by itself. All of the groups on D will have to be effective to at least an average level for the sum of the whole to be greater than the sum of the parts.

To be honest I am more concerned with DBs than anything else on D.

All LSU needs is one of those tackles to take it to the next level, hopefully one does.

Yeah, I saw that. He’s had a pretty solid career.

look, it's very early and we'll need to wait until we actually play some games to see what we really have on defense, but I think a lot of people on this board are in denial.

Our defense was abysmal last year, and I'm not convinced we added the talent we need.

Sorry, but I'm not wearing P&G glasses - I expect our defense to have serious issues again this year.

I think the coaching on defense was HORRIBLE last year, and we seem to have addressed that. I think we have the talent to be a competent (not elite) defense, as long as guys understand what they are doing.

Look at it this way: do you think that LSU has a significant talent edge over Grambling? I do. We should be able to just line up and overwhelm them (which we did, overall).

So, let's look at how the game opened:
Grambling 1st drive: Touchdown
7 plays, 83 yards, 2:56

Grambling 2nd drive: Field Goal
12 plays, 80 yards, 5:59

Grambling 3rd drive: Missed FG
9 plays, 69 yards, 2:38

Ok, sure we beat them 72-10 . They shouldn't be able to hang with our guys; maybe get lucky and score on a big play or something. But looking at those numbers, it wasn't luck, they controlled the ball and moved on our starters, with 3 straight long drives. The fewest plays came on the TD drive. Grambling should not have a 12 play drive against ANY P5 defense, and certainly not against LSU in the 1st quarter, and not on the next drive following a TD the previous one.

That tells me the defense was fricking around trying to be fancy (something House was known for), and just didn't know what they were doing. At some point I suspect Kelly said "enough bullshite, just play simple straight-up defense" and it put an end to that.

The TL,DR version: we don't have the talent to be elite, but our schemes made everything a lot worse than it should have been. Guys were lost out there.

at DT, we have:

5* 1
4* 2
3* 6 (1 is a converted OL)

there is some talent there. plus, we now have Bo Davis. i'm expecting this unit to be better vs the run and that alone will be an improvement.

i'm also expecting us to turn Perkins loose and our secondary to not have as many blown coverages. if we are just an avg SEC defense this year, that's a big improvement.

Orgeron's 20 and 21 seasons and off the field behavior put LSU's dline and db's in this position yet many of you celebrate him like he is a god. There is no doubt Kelly and the defensive coaches will get it fixed!

I disagree with this, to an extent. This isn’t going to be nearly the caliber of defense that woebegone LSU fans have come to expect, and I don’t think it will be good enough to go deep into the playoffs. But I think they’ll be better than what we all hated to watch last year (hard to imagine anything worse!). To start with, I think the O is going to be a big difference- maker based on the pace of play. With the RBs we have -and a best-in-class O line - I think we can pound it out and control the clock. That should take pressure off the D, unlike last year where we were so explosive that, at times, it seemed like we scored every 3d play and put a flailing D right back on the field. This year, we’ll be able to slow it down behind the strength of the offensive line and pound the ground game, which will give the D a break they didn’t have last year and, more important, give the bettter defensive coaching staff a chance to coach them up while the O is on the field. My point being that I don’t think we can entirely scheme around the lack of top-tier bodies on the defensive line, but there are things I think we can and will do to mitigate the lack of depth and experience.

You can’t, people love to make stuff up. They may or may not be bad, but there’s no way of knowing at this point.

I don't think they'll be bad, I think they'll be average by sec standards which would be a huge win

We will be ok. We have solid edge rushers in Swinson, Womack and Savion Jones. Guillory will be a good not great guy that does his job as the nose tackle and eats up blockers while I think the Wisconsin transfer has the early edge to start as the 3-tech DT but I think we see a lot of Paris Shand kicking inside to that spot. You also some new guys who have lots of promise in Reliford, Mckinley, Breaux, Washington, Paez and Carpenter. Most importantly we have better coaches with a better scheme. Baker doesn’t make things as complex as House does and just tries to put his playmakers in a spot they can make plays. It’s why he wants Perkins in the middle of the field and he moved Major Burns from safety to the Star position close to the line where he can be physical and not as much in pass coverage. We have 3 legit NFL LBs in Perkins, Weeks and Penn with a bunch of talent in the secondary. I am excited to see how JK Johnson and Zy Alexander bounce back from their injuries but they have Stanps and Woodland right there on their heels. Iron sharpens iron. Hopefully our OL goes hard on the DL and gets them ready for USC.
