Plus outfielder and very good contact hitter? Would you complain about another Antoine Duplantis?

He’s been playing in very big tournaments since he was a kid. Perfect game has stuff on him from when he was playing 9U baseball. He’s mentioned in 199 articles on their site. He was listed at 5’11” 145 lbs at 13 years old. He’s listed at 6’1 175 now. As several others said, he didn’t fill out as expected and hasn’t improved his game the way scouts thought.

This confirms exactly wheat I thought and what I'm seeing for myself.

He is overrated and scouts have know this for 2 years. He was not going to get drafted. It doesn’t matter where perfect game has him ranked. Coordinated young and hasn’t lifted the weights to keep up with other players in his class. He has a lot of work to do to see the field as a freshman.

From MLB Top 2024 Baseball Draft Prospects:

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 50 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

Orange Lutheran High School has produced three first-rounders over the years, starting with Gerrit Cole -- a first-rounder in 2008 who went on to UCLA and became the No. 1 overall pick in 2011 -- along with right-hander Cole Winn in 2018 and Mikey Romero in 2022. (Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell was a 14th-round pick in high school, then followed Cole’s path and was a Bruins first-rounder in 2020.) Curiel entered the summer showcase circuit looking like he might continue that line, and while he showed off some skills and played for Team USA, scouts didn’t think he had the kind of summer performance they expected from him, and he continued to get mixed results from evaluators this spring.

Tools-wise, Curiel has a package that reminds some of a Pete Crow-Armstrong or a Michael A. Taylor. A left-handed hitter, Curiel’s bat-to-ball skills are excellent, and he rarely strikes out. But while there is some gap power in there, it’s been softer contact than some hoped to see at this point. He hasn’t gotten much stronger or grown from when he first arrived on the high school scene and he’s yet to show he can add strength to his narrow frame or have impact at the plate.

While Curiel is now mostly an average runner, he does have outstanding instincts that will let him play center field for a long time. That with his knack for finding the barrel gives him a pretty decent floor as a big leaguer, and there are some who think he might go on to LSU and come out as a high floor college hitter. There might be some prospect fatigue here as Curiel has been “famous” for a while, with the industry reminding itself that it took a player like Taylor a long time to fully develop.

Exactly. Curiel isn't going to be Dylan Crews. Very, very few will be. And if he were, he was probably going to sign. Just because he won't be Dylan Crews doesn't mean he can't have a very productive college career.

We don't need him to be Dylan Crews but we need him to hit for a higher average than Paxton Kling.

Not really, it's what gets him to campus. They're writing those profiles for what to expect in pro ball. That profile reads very similarly to Antoine Duplantis, but I don't think anyone would hate Curiel having that kind of career at LSU.

It's also helpful that he's pretty much skipping summer ball this year to get on campus and get in the weight room. He will be given the opportunity to address one of the criticisms immediately.

It's a scouting report. It highlights everyone's pros and cons. the same publications that write this still have him as the #10 prospect coming out of high school.

#10 Perfect Game

So you're saying of the top 117 players on mlb.com only 10 are high school players? That's wrong

And the rant narrative is born. Kid is doomed for 60% of posters on this board before he even puts on a uniform.

I’ll get excited after the draft - this doesn’t stop teams from drafting him. That’s unfortunate
