He was an above average QB that had an above average receiver in Wendell Davis and above average RB in Harvey Williams, but overall, the team was average in the SEC. 8 wins was considered a very successful season in the late 1980's. LSU has been spoiled recently. Hodson was very handsome which added to his popularity.

I remember the game with Kentucky where he got whacked hard and bit clear through his tongue, got 5 stitches in it after spitting up what seemed like 235 pints of blood, and came back into the game in the next quarter with his head still buzzing, and led the team to a win.
"Dr. William Carona, LSU's team dentist: "It was a gutty way to play. He was tongue-tied for 45 minutes, and he was groggy. What we did to fix him up was pretty gruesome, but it worked."
Harvey Williams: "When he came in, it was like he was in the Twilight Zone. We couldn't understand what he was saying because of the stitches I guess. When you see a guy play like that, it picks you up."
Hodson: " I was kind of out of it. I hit my head on the ground pretty hard, and I didn't know if I had a concussion. He numbed it and put some deadening stuff in there. And he put three stitches on top and two on the bottom and closed it up."

Hodson to Davis was special. Tommy was a calm leader. Would love to see the current QB's get in his shoes.

"Above average"??? Wtf
Hodson and Davis were two of the best ever at LSU. They were great players. The 1987 team set records and was one of the best teams in LSU history. When fully healthy they could have beaten anyone that year including Miami.

And didn't even start as a true freshman.

Yeah he only holds almost every passing record at LSU, and did so in the sec before spread offenses came around. First 9,000 yard passer in sec history.

they went 9-3 with a sugar bowl loss, and 10-1-1 in his first two seasons.
LSU fans are spoiled because Les Miles has won at least 10 games in 7 of his 10 seasons. Only won 10 games 3 times in the previous 40 seasons before him.

I'm 42 and I put Hodson in the top 3 of "my day". Hodson, Russell, Rohan. Mett with an honorable mention.

The SEC's all-time leading passer before Spurrier changed the passing game in the SEC.

He couldn't catch the friggin center snap, though!
One year, it was common for Hodson to fumble five snaps per game. That's NOT an exaggeration.
But he WAS an exceptional QB.

How could that possibly not be an exaggeration? And if it isn't then why have I never heard anyone mention it?
