Someone would have been. LSU took a reasonable gamble. (And it is 100% reasonable to predict losing a couple of players to grades on a very good 28 player class.) Guys did well on tests and in the classroom.
Muddy arguements don't contain acceptable logic just because it is in vogue to pile on the coaching staff. Want to argue that if Porter was only informed about the situation this week, that it was poor communication? Fine. Can't argue that. (Although it is hard to believe that as the coaches look at their board fill and know who they may have to cut off, that they don't start mentioning it to players.)
Regardless, there is a difference between a poorly handled situation and making a crap decision. LSU didn't have a choice in the decision, grey shirts had to be requested.

yea bush league if the kid was given notice 24 hrs before Fall camp started as reported
it is fricked up
but it is a move obviously dictated on when the Gore decision was announced.
my question is, why not offer the kid with questionable grades a greyshirt?
Porter doesnt deserve this, but i can kind of see how it went down. Miles had to wait this long because of the NCAA...and im sure Porter was aware beforehand that he would possibly have to greyshirt

I just feel the need to say that we have FIVE fricking interior linemen, again.
Move on over from blocking tight end, Nic and Jordan. You are the next Tackles for LSU. Now we will move more OTs in the OG spot for depth.

Having to be under both the 85 and 25 in order to count anyone back is not a new rule.
Edit:
I didn't say it was a new rule. Someone back on like page 2 or 3 did...

The problem with that is do you punish a kid who worked hard to get in? Who is to say Porter or any other kid who never had grade issues didn't coast in school while a kid who squeaks in worked their butt off? It is too hard to start making judgement calls on which already signed recruit "deserves" a scholarship more, I think. So you probably just end up going with which player would be left off if you had to recruit them all over again...

Why in the hell would you Greyshirt an incoming OL when you only have 11 ol's on the roster?
Is depth not as important as I think it is?
Where am I wrong?

No. We were at 85 in the Fall so nobody could count back.

We have pleanty enough OL depth for this season. He was either going to be a redshirt or a greyshirt. Either way, he would not have provided depth this year and Louisiana is loaded with OL prospects for 2011.

you dont punish him
you tell him if he makes it, he has to greyshirt.

Porter went to Shaw, a pretty good school. If he had grade problems then treat them equal, but i dont think he did.

WTF??
are you saying that some of these kids with bad grades might be functionally retarded and had to work 2x as hard to get their d's and c's as compared to some other kid who was just naturally smarter and coasted his way to C's and B's???
My question is, if we had to do a greyshirt looking at depth chart, talent of the players, the current recruiting class, and needs, was Porter the best one to offer a greyshirt knowing he may not accept

In a perfect world that's how it would work lester. Unfortunately the more talented you are the longer people will leave a spot open for you. This staff really likes Gore and there's no way they would approach him about a greyshirt. Gore has a chance to contribute this year, Porter not so much.
It's also easier to get an in state kid to agree to do this anyway

Definitely, but it probably should be part of the conversation throughout the whole recruiting process.

we don't know that it wasn't.
Lester usually takes NO kids leaving hard
