I don't reckon anyone remembers Jim Taylor or Steve Van Buren...
I remember Taylor from his later years at Green Bay and New Orleans. Van Buren was a bit before my time.

Auburn wanted no more of him in that game.
And thanks to Morris Watts, they didn't get any more of him with the game on the line.

But yeh Faulk was a game changer
IMO, his punt return was the punch in the mouth vs Florida. I remember there were concerns that LSU simply did not have the horses to run with the Gators. Faulk made his demonstration and Tyler scores on the very next play. At that point it was game on.

Saw him catch his first punt, a line drive right at him with both hands / arms outstretched, like catching a pass. But to me, one thing really stood out over the course of his career: he returned for his 4th, senior yr.

That just reinforces how incredible the midfield Tiger Eye logo is.

I actually think it was Cecil Collins.
Collins strength/power was unbelievable. Had back to back unreal games against Auburn and Miss st. Problem was he didn’t have near the vision and the ability to avoid tackles that Faulk had. Hence he took a beating and his career was short lived. Faulk was great for four college years and many pro years therefore he is the better back. For a single game I’d take a healthy Cecil. For a season definitely Faulk

I'm too young(45) to have seen Jimmy Taylor play live, but as a lifelong LSU fan touring Lambeau Field a few years ago, I was bursting with pride seeing how much they love Jimmy Taylor in Green Bay. His jersey, name, likeness is embedded all around the facility, and obviously in the Ring of Honor.

My wife bought me an LSU jersey with Jimmy Taylor on the back of it and his number when he was at LSU for that trip to Lambeau.
He was my Dad's favorite player. He was a Packer fan because Taylor played for them and as he always told me those great Packer teams built their offense around him. He was the only player during Jim Browns 9 years other than Brown to win an NFL rushing title.
Got lot's of comments on it several from Wisconsin/Green Bay fans who did not know he played at LSU.
Have a picture in front of his name on the wall of honor at Lambeau. Great experience.

I was young but I went to every home game back when Faulk was playing, I remember the fans who sat behind us made Superman shirts one game and gave everyone in my family one

Noticed you were class of ‘77 e so I consider you a young Buck. Give Faulk his his due he was a great RB. But lets go back to the 1940s. LSU had a great RB named Steve Van Buren. Steve was not only a great back at LSU he was a great back in the pros. Van Buren led the Eagles to the NFC Championship 2 imes in a row but he was one of the first RB, if not the first to average over 100 per game rushing in a season. He was one of 2 RB who were selected to the First 50 years of pro football team.

Single handily won that game
Did they just literally hand the ball off to him on every play?

Would have loved to see what Cecil Collins could have done with a full career...his 3-4 games in 1997 were amazing...

People forget how fast he was, because of his NFL career. Ran a 4.4 at the combine, iirc
Belichick wanted a between the tackles bruiser, so Kev changed both his running style, and his physique.

Besides Faulk, so many could be added to that list. Just off the top of my head: Cecil Collins (though just for a few games), Charles Alexander, Brad Davis, Dalton Hillard, Jeremy Hill, Harvey Williams, Terry Robiskie. I'm sure I am leaving off many many that could be in that conversation. Billy Cannon, Art Cantrelle for a couple old timers. Jerry Stoval. Dam, almost for got about Guice and Fournette.
edit: wanted to add Joseph Addai and Hester.

I was very surprised we landed Hilliard over Nebraska..... he was so much fun to watch. The move he put on that ND player in TS was amazing... he’s still looking for that jock.

His game against Houston was spectacular. High reel game
I remember we were down a couple of scores and looked to be headed for an embarrassing opening game loss and then he just said Nope and took over. That game and his game vs UK a year later were just insan
I remember the week of that game Kim Helton the UoH coach was on a NOLA night time radio show doing and interview and some fool called in and said "the crowd and mystique of tiger stadium would beat the cougars" Helton laughed and said "young man, the crowd can't make a tackle or score a touchdown" he was right but.... jesus they were killing LSU until Faulk took control
