A school in the deep south has one black head coach (Coach Robinson, Cross Country). How is this not a disgrace?
This is why people talk about the NCAA "plantation."
The lack of black head coaches in the NCAA, particularly in basketball, is disgraceful.
ETA: I am not picking on LSU, it is a problem throughout the NCAA. I'm an LSU fan.
A. Are you black?
B. This is so stupid to bring up in this thread. LSU's last 2 head coaches were black. Benford was a black head coach who failed miserably and we gave him a job. Are you made we gave him a job?
Shaka Smart is at Texas and Avery Johnson is at Alabama. So two "iconically Southern racist" states have hired black head coaches at their flagship universities.

So Coach Jones was too incompetent and inept to be the head basketball coach at LSU, but the coach who coach who couldn't carry on Coach Jones' legacy at UNT is competent enough to be an assistant?
Your logic doesn't stand up very well. assistant coach vs head coach is a totally different job.
You also have to expect a pretty significant transition period moving from the sun belt conference to CUSA. That's a huge jump in quality.

How is that hard to process?
head coach =/= assistant

62% of the Division I basketball players are black. Before this year's firing of Coach Jones and Coach Thompson, 18.6% of the head coaches in Division 1 are black. This cannot be defended.

Once again... That whole logic thing really isn't your strongsuit...
Playing basketball and coaching basketball is a totally different thing. You dont have to be a good player to be a coach. IDK how to get this idea that different positions require a different skillset.

Doesn't seem like bashing as much as questioning and wanting more info. Most in here don't seem like they are out of line in trying to understand the hire. Don't need to get all defensive...

Since my comment some interesting opinions have come out, but most seem to be happy with the hire. Others (chinhoyang) are just ridiculous.

I agree - apparently being white is part of that head coach skill set.
ETA: I hope Coach Wade does well because I want LSU's basketball program to kick arse. But, I think we would have been better served if the school had made a good faith effort to find a qualified black head coach.

Well, you've officially taken this thread off the rails. Pat yourself on the back

Dude you are so far off your rocker. You truly are awful.

We should have definitely found someone in that 18% pool of applicants rather than the 82% pool. Seems much easier that way.

So Blacks are 13% of pop yet have 18% of the jobs. So by your logic how can Whites only make up at most 38% of players? Maybe cause they aren't good enough...well that goes for coaches too.

The cirlce will be truly complete if UNT had re-hire Johnny as their head coach..
I would love to see Coach Jones go back to UNT and do well.

Why?
What is better about a black coach than a white coach? What is the difference besides skin color? Seems pretty racist to me.
You pick most qualified, regardless of race. We did that and got a great candidate.

Im just glad to see a buzz for hoops. Program has been bashed heavily, and rightfully so, for quite some time now.

Uh...the President of the United States for 8 years was black and look where that got us!! It is time to stop with this "we get passed over because of our skin color"...The leader of the free world was your color so......

Make a list of successful black college basketball coaches.
It's an extremely short list, both all-time and currently.
I got:
Nolan Richardson and John Thompson as the only elite-level black coaches -- ever.
Next tier would be Tubby Smith and John Cheney. It gets extremely dicey after that: Kevin Ollie won a title at UConn, but may get fired in the next few years. Shaka Smart? Mike Anderson?

John McClendon was a good coach back in his day. He had success at the collegiate and pro level. I know that was a really long time ago, but I would put him on that list of successful coaches.

maybe if more of them were hired, the list would be longer
