re: I don't get Jake Slaughter leaving

I've been reading the Jake Slaughter debate for 2 years, as well as other similar players. Lets be real honest. A lot of LSU baseball fans are "old school baseball people". They think batting .300 (even if that is all singles), not striking out, and not making errors on routine plays (even if they never make a spectacular play) makes a good baseball player. Maybe these "old school baseball people" are right-- but nobody in Major League Baseball agrees with them. Slugging percentage is the most important stat in baseball. On base percentage is second. Nobody cares about batting average. Nobody cares if you strike out looking dumb once or twice a game. Nobody cares if you make a throwing error on a routine play every few games (especially if you make up for it with a spectacular play). If you can't OPS at .750 or above, you aren't good. It doesn't matter how good you are at defense or not striking out or hitting singles. Too many LSU baseball fans still want to judge players based on how often they "look dumb" (or don't) versus actual tangible metrics that matter towards winning baseball games.
Broussard had an OPS of .639. Hughes had an OPS of .581. These dudes can't start at LSU if you want to win a national title. Hell, even Reid had an OPS of .721 (thanks to 19 walks in 79 plate appearances). Slaughter had an OPS of .778. It's not close as to who's the best between those 4.

Broussard
Had the highest BA on the team before he got hurt.
For every Krob there is a Slaughter. And there are few Krobs.
It’s not like he didn’t get playing time, over Reid, which I agree with but he didn’t produce. Not like he could have. It was the right move.

It sounds like there may have been an issue with the family (particularly his dad) thinking Slaughter was taking too much heat at LSU
Someone should have told his dad that the rant is a joke, and not to listen to people on here.

OBP is about 1.8 times more valuable than slugging, in terms of run production. Power plays though because 1 home run is more good than 3 strikeouts are bad.
Slaughter really cut his K rate as the season went on. He upped his walk rate. His K rate in general, while high relative to LSU players, was still better than NCAA average.
I don't think people realize how little LSU strikes out as a team. It made Slaughter look to the average fan like he was striking out all the time, but in reality, that wasn't the case.
The other thing he did was hit into a ton of double plays. Contrary to what some here would tell you, that's not an indicator of poor talent. Usually means you're hitting the ball hard. But they're memorable and negative, so it shaded the perception of him.

Did you watch the last 6 weeks of the season? Dude produced. Like the poster above said you must just be looking only at BA. if not I’m not sure how you act like Broussard is a player and Slaughter can’t produce. Broussard didn’t do shot when it mattered in SEC play.

Sounds like the dad has an big ego about his son. And even though his son was giving playing time and didn’t put up good stats and still complains.
Nothing I hate more than those with big egos and have nothing to back it up with except telling us more how awesome they are.

Ican believe PM told 3 of these guys to sign.

He could roll in high school. Scored 30+ TDs his junior year at OCS. I couldn't tell you why that didn't translate into stolen bases for LSU.

I always pulled hard for Jake but ended up banging my head against the wall a lot, too.
To me he never, ever looked confident at the plate or in the field.
He always looked sort of down on himself.
However, in recent years, I can't remember many years since Skip left that we had a ton of guys walking up to the plate like they were going to rape the pitcher's sister or mother either. Soft, in other words.

I completely agree with your subjective analysis. That still doesn't change the fact that we don't have better options statistically though.

JS, in his last 31 games, had a .291BA and 6 HR's.
I am sorry to see him go but if family was a problem I can see why PM advised he leave.

Statically though, can they be much worse?

OCS high school ball definitely compares to LSU and SEC competition
OCS plays in lowest classification they can dominate and they hold kids back, I guess he did put up those numbers at OCS

Also, TRant dogged him out of town basically.

Yall do realize that Slaughter was our 4th best hitter at the end of the season huh? Watson, Duplantis, and Cabrera were the only 3 better...
Didn't he only hit somewhere around 3 for 23 in the SEC Tournament? Let's not act like he was lighting it up at the end.
