I think if you'll take the time to listen to KW's press conference questions from the beginning of summer practices that were linked on this site a few days ago, you will find all the answers you need.
He addresses what the coaches have told him he needs to improve on, and even goes into detail on why Hester became the main back last year.
I honestly thought Hester starting at TB vs. Miss. St. last year was an attempt to throw Va. Tech off, but as the season progressed, it became apparent that Miles had a method to his madness.
Hester never lost 14 yards in one carry. I would bet that he didn't lose 14 yards in all of his carries last year. He had many key blocks on passing downs, and probably led the nation in yards after contact.
KW had few, if any, yards after contact. He had trouble following blocks b/w the tackles, and always went down in the open field when one defender had the angle on him.
All that being said, it pissed me off when Hester received the toss or option pitch to the short side of the field, although it worked on a crucial down on the last Auburn drive, and again late in the SECCG.

I think Miles would rather eval risk potential vs. home run threat. And with the all-around talent this team has (had last year), that ain't a bad strategy.

I don't know what the problem is. I'm not privy to practice, so I can't comment on what's going on there. He may fumble it in practice, he may not put it on the ground at all. I don't know.
What I do know is that he has not yet lived up to his potential, even when he does get the carries. He is no doubt a homerun threat every time he gets the ball in space. But I haven't seen him get himself into space on his own. It's all been designed plays (i.e. pitchouts, screens, etc). He hasn't shown that he can make something out of nothing or turn what should be a 4 yard gain into a 40 yard TD. Watch highlights of Beanie Wells to see what I mean. I think KW has the talent to be a similar back, but he just hasn't put it all together just yet.
At the same time, we have 2 other great backs who need to see the field. Each of them will have to make the most of the carries that they do get.
I was talking to somebody today and we both agreed that Richard Murphy has a fire in the way he runs that you don't see from either of our other two. He reminded us of RBs from Auburn of late, who never seem to go down with the first contact, yet haven't been the biggest guys (Kenny Irons comes to mind). RM has the ability to take it to the house any time he touches it as well, and I'm excited to see him get an expanded role this year.

Keiland and the RB coach have never seen eye to eye. This persists, and along with KW's inability to show the ability to agressively run inside the tackles, makes him the accent guy vs the main guy. Scott has everything needed to excel in the LSU offense, thus he is the more all-round choice and will likely have the first chance to be the main guy.

He's much more similar to Cadillac than Irons.

Murphy is not like anyone, but has parts of Marcus Allen, parts if Terry Robiskie and parts of Harvey Williams in his running style and ability

Yeah, no doubt.
There have also been rumblings about friction b/w KW and Porter, but I don't see that playing any part in Hester getting the bulk of the work last year.
Might play a role in the future, though?
Our roster and depth are almost unimaginably good. And these kids are of great character, too. I know that sounds like the company line, but believe me when I tell you, if you are not a quality and committed spokesperson for the program, you are not in the program.
These kids believe in what they're doing, and it shows.

about what?

As I have said already, after more than 100 carries what are you expecting a back to show you that he hasn't already shown? KW is good but not great. CS will get more totes, Murphy in set situations, and Ridley increasingly more. The TB and FB situation will make itself very clear by the third game. Don't be surprised if KW gets fewer carries than last year. Also there may be things behind the scene with team issues that may be in KW's way.

He does seem to fumble at the worst time which sits him on the bench.
So your definition of the worst time to fumble is once in a spring game? You might need to take a chill pill and not drink so much during the games because KW has never fumbled in an actual game.

I'll never understand why people don't realize this. Hell, they were saying he was a fumbler BEFORE the spring game fumble. It's just a flat out untruth.

last year it was ridiculous, even after hester fumbled

And I'm not sure I agree with the "inability to run between the tackles" thing either. Most of the times that I saw him run inside, the blocking was not good. He has to have a little blocking...see Charles Scott on the final play of the UK game. KW's got good size, but he's not Earl Campbell...he can't just run over everyone. Now admittedly, I have seen him miss some holes, but I believe that could be solved if they would just leave him in a little longer and develop a rhythm.

This thread depresses me more than I can articulate. The rest of the SEC disparages LSU. We shouldn't needlessly criticize and denounce our own talented players.
Maybe Keiland will have a fantastic season. It's entirely possible that he emerges as the feature back. I like him, as I do all of our RB's.
In any event, I will always be grateful for the ridiculously athletic TD run out of the pistol formation against VT. That was the best touchdown run in Tiger Stadium since LaBrandon Toefield pimp-slapped a Vol.

after just watching Miles' media day press conference today on lsusports.net, its obvious that Charles Scott is the starting running back. He praised Scott for looking great in camp as well as being a team leader.
He also mentioned KW FOURTH when discussing running backs and only as an afterthought after talking up the other 3 backs. It appears he's seriously in the doghouse...and I have no idea why.

then please tell me why C.S got a grand total of 12 carries in LSU's last SIX games. so i guess the RB coach must've not seen eye to eye with C.S too then.
the way i see it, the coaches just favored Hester more.
