This is pretty close. Anyone who doesn't have Wilt as the most dominant and most freakishly athletic center of all time does not know what they're talking about.
Shaq; however, definitely belongs in the next group with Russel and others.

Great athlete and was fun to have on campus. Always out and about and open for conversation. Even Shaq was amazed by Chris Jackson.

Nothing really exciting but 2 things stick in my memory from my time at LSU with him.
1) I would pass him up in the quad every MWF (he actually went to class a lot) and I would barely come up to his chest (I'm 5'10").
2) Saw him at Sports a couple of times and he would be surrounded by sorority chicks at the bar - like 3 deep.

I remember TJ Pugh missing a short jump shot in transition and Shaq comes flying in, jumps mid-lane, catches the rebound with one hand at about what seemed like 10 feet from the rim, and slammed it home. I was 13. It was glorious.
I'll see if I can find the clip. If anyone else has it, please post.
EDIT: Here it is. The slam is at 1:16.

I also remember seeing Bill Walton walking with Shaq through campus. He was there to help Shaq with free throws.
You had ONE job, Bill!

Olajuwan was NOT that size! He was the most extraordinary big center I've ever seen, though.
Wikipedia has Olajuwan 1" shorter, so my bad.

If i get one player to build a team around, in the history of the nba mind you, based on their absolute prime i would take shaq. No question. At his peak he could put up 40pts and 20 boards when he felt like it.

Who shot more jumpshots their freshman year, Shaq or Ben Simmons?
IIRC, Shaq was standing at the top of the key with nobody guarding him one time, so he bricked up a 3 pointer and it went in

Didn't he get suspended against TN during the SEC tourny for a cheesy GI Joe elbow and KY, a team LSU whipped during the regular season, ended up winning it?
Shaq rightfully went after a Tenn player after a number of cheap and increasingly dangerous fouls. The last one the Tenn player just wrapped his arms around Shaq pulling him down and could have injured Shaq. Tenn could not stop Shaq so they just decided to resort to flagrant fouls. The refs should have put a stop to it before it went as far as it did.

I was at a game against Auburn and LSU was up by quite a bit. Daddy Dale let Shaq play the point. He was great. He was an amazing athlete. i taught him as a TA and was smart, funny and a great guy.

The problem during Shaq's days were the officials. They literally allowed Shaq to get mauled without any real repercussions. I can't remember the game - UT maybe - where Shaq is going up for a dunk and he gets grabbed by the waist and pulled down.
Now you see all these ticky tack fouls in CBB and wonder WTF was going on. Refs were intimidated by coaches.

Your call but not a good one in my opinion. Wilt or MJ would be the better option in my opinion.

If you put 25 yr old wilt in a time capsule and dropped him into a game against Shaq in 1996, wilt would get ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED!!!! Shaq was at least the same height, had wilt by 30 to 40 lbs, and was more agile and athletic than the stilt. Still not convinced? Time warp 25 yr old Shaq into an early 60s NBA game, and let him feast on the 6/8 Eddie haskils with tape on their glasses that wilt did!!!

lsu vs loyola marymount
Watch this for Shaq and CJ entertainment. Some say the greatest game ever played in the PMAC.

Well it is in my opinion. Lol. If shaq had played during wilt's time he could have literally done anything he wanted. You only had a few guys in the entire nba at that time that would have been any competition at all to him. Jordan had a better career. Was more skilled as well. I just dont think in their primes he could bring as much to the table as Shaq .......the dominant big man argument and such.

People get caught up in the stats for Wilt and Russell without realizing what the league was compared to the modern league.
To build off of what you and the poster you quoted have said, this is the exact same argument I have about boxers. A lot of people consider Ali to be the greatest boxer of all time, but he in his prime couldn't beat today's Klitchko. The only heavyweight whom I think could beat those before and after him was Lennox Lewis. Similarly, Shaq in his prime would've beaten the wilts and the russells in their primes, as well as the players that came after him. In the context of their respective periods, no doubt the wilts and the russells were transcendent players, but shaq is one of those rare players who would've been dominant in any period, including today.

Who was the most dominant big man of all time? Prior to 2001 (Shaq's prime), the NBA had not allowed the zone defense in 50 or 60 years. They had to change the rules to give the rest of the league a chance.
