But that’s mainly because I think Crews is going to end up being our center fielder and Drost our right fielder next year anyway

Anything is possible, but I doubt Crews is in CF next year. He’s fast enough, but he does not have plus speed for a CF. I want someone like Gio out there. And you want Crews’ arm in RF.

But half the games are on the road so I just dont think that makes much of a difference.

And then there are night games.

Since we’re quibbling, half the games are NOT on the road. If we have a good team we have 5 to 7 playoff games at home, and most of our midweeks, plus a few early series. Way more at home than on the road.

And that’s why I brought up night games.
Without counting I’m estimating that roughly 80% of our games are night games. And some of the day games are road games.

How many games are okay to sacrifice in your eyes on misplayed balls in RF by someone who is less comfortable with the sun?

Forget talent, ell thinks LSU should be searching the high school ranks for the kid that has the best sunglasses and eye black.

Come on, this is a bit much

Define what you mean by “less comfortable” because I don’t know any players that are comfortable with the Sun in their eyes. I’d say just about every player is “less comfortable.
Then tell me how many games are you willing to sacrifice by putting a CFer in the game whose not as good at running down fly balls, line drives, Texas Leaguers, and limiting runners to an extra base, but is playing there because he’s a freshman and you don’t want him in RF where you are playing a better OFer there who has more experience in Alex Box? Weaker CF play will cost you more games over the long run than misplayed ball by our RFer due to the Sun.

If a kid can’t play the Sun field and is a liability, I might bench him or DH him. I’d never swap him with my CFer if my CFer was demonstrably better.

ETA: I’m no historian, how many misplayed balls in RF have wd had because of the Sun? Has it ever been a big issue with one of our kids?

I know it cost Miss State a game a few years ago. That’s all I can recall off the top of my head.

At the end of the day, all we are discussing is justifiable logic supported by our own opinions. By what I know via my experience and what LSU coaches themselves have said, RF is difficult at LSU. And I understand and even support the logic of putting the player with less recent experience in CF on a temporary basis.

A sun field is tougher to play. No argument there. I can understand a coach saying RF at the Box is difficult in day games. And yes the mounds are always a hazard. But there are no other unusual circumstances. There’s no green monster, no funny angles, and it’s not extraordinarily deep. The power alley is modest. Not deep. Not shallow.

I hope Laird is staying up to date on those child support payments to Oxford.

No doubt about this. However, ell is not suggesting we put a weak guy in CF. If Crews had better range then he would go in CF. I don’t think ell is arguing that. But everything close to equal, you want your experienced guy, who can better handle the obstacles, in RF. Plus the arm.

ETA: I fell asleep in the seventh. What was the bump for?

Ell and I were discussing a general statement. He believes RF at the Box is tougher to play than CF at the Box. I disagreed. It’s not complicated.

It has nothing to do with the skills of Crews or Drost.

I haven’t seen Drost or Crews play enough to see who would be the better CFer, but from what I’ve read and seen; neither is really CF material. Now that’s just my quick take. Time would tell.

The bump was for the right fielder for youngstown st failing to catch a fly ball because he was unsure About the bullpen mound....and it threw him off. That was a part of the debate of how tough right field at the box is
