re: No State Taxes on NIL

Scholarship money, ~$25-36k/yr depending if you live on campus or not, hasn’t been taxed previously…so I’m sure they’re just trying to lump this in. Seems like the narrative should be that they won’t tax profit sharing, but will for NIL since it should be more like a job. Most collectives make you appear once a month for that check.

Everything you just posted about it’s effect on the state’s tax income is true…
…but you fail to realize what we are discussing is the optics of this.
Many of us already find NIL becoming ‘pay to play’ to be loathesome. Now we have a bill pushing to coddle to these primadonna athletes even more while this state continues to lose its best and brightest to other states because of how little our politicians care to actually change anything of value.
College sports is the latest distraction this state is using to put lipstick on a damn pig.
Dixon McMakin, Catholic-BR’s own, is the state representative that drafted this bill. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t read TD. I hope he does and realizes the majority of LSU fans are not on board with this.

Agree with the post above. I pay out of my arse in various taxes on everything I earn, own, then buy. This pisses me off to no end. Scholarships and everything else they get, fine. But this? frick all that. Insane to get a million dollar NIL deal and pay NO TAXES? Nope nope nope nope.
If I was blessed with earning or winning anything, the state would tax the frick out of it. This isn't right.

Welcome to Texas. The land where the tax payers pays for those in apartments through school and property (local and county) taxes.
Then there are “mud or improvement” taxes for many developments. That’s how you pay the developer over and over again.
If you want to gripe about fair or unfair, pay higher property and start paying local school taxes. That is the only way you get rid of income tax.

What will be fascinating as this matures, will high tax states try to tax NIL when you show up to play a game in their state?
Posted on 2/26/25 at 7:14 am to NorCali
The NIL is earned in the State in which the athlete resides. When revenue share starts (probably in the Summer/Fall of 2025), an argument could possibly be made that the player is being paid for the game on the road (similar to pro athletes). That is a very good question..

This is just stupid and is as stupid as people thinking tips and OT should not be taxed.
They are being paid. They should be taxed like everyone else. But as usual max pathetic athletes and their handlers along with selfish money grubbing As are ruining college athletics.
I have an idea. Any money that is donated to a collective or for use in athletic activities can no longer be considered a charitable donation. Tax the donor for this shite if people are that stupid to pay these kids.
Again, let the pro leagues pay for their own minor leagues and end the joke that college sports has become.

No state income tax is nice, but be aware of what takes the place of it. In Texas, we pay stupid high property taxes. They separate land and detached buildings from the house, and there is NO cap on how high they can value the land.
Be careful what you wish for…
But yeah, this idea of no tax on NIL is ridiculous.

Is this even constitutional?
Of course it is, tax codes are littered with incentives and loopholes.

Tips are not salaries, and incentives for OT increase productivity. NIL is a different animal but because SEC states love their athletics this will have support.

Yeah this might be the nail in the coffin for me. Kind of pathetic the obstacles that can moved in legislation when it benefits people and organizations with deep pockets. This is turning into some kind of gross hero worship for kids no one knows who have done nothing. Seeing that old UGA now Miami Qb have 2 luxury cars stolen.
I’m good with college sports. Maybe it’s time to grow up.

This has been my thought all along when people keep suggesting to get rid of the 4%. I would guarantee Saint Tammany would absolutely destroy me (not like they already do). But you vote no on something, they over assess your house to get it next time. It’s too shady to give your local politicians more discretion.
On the NIL issue, you wanna be a professional and make all the money. Be an adult and pay like the rest of us. LSU has ZERO problem already increasing my fees and tickets to compensate.

This is true except when our taxes are froze at 65.
With that, you left off school tax or improvement taxes (as in some developments).
At the end of the day, you have to pay for your government and all the programs it provides like roads, schools, etc.

You don’t understand that shortfall will be made up by the working people in this state.
Shortfall? There was no mass NIL until just 2-3 years ago.
Relax, the vast majority of players aren’t sitting on the money they are buying gold chains and Lamborghinis contributing sales tax dollars.
Whiners here about LA state coffers missing out on $1.5 M (30 M NIL budget X 5%) will be the first to whine when Kelly loses 3 games next year.

Funny how we can't get another bridge to fix the huge traffic issue that resides in this states capital city because "planning" but mention a possible way to increase NIL to stay competitive in sports and legislation moves quickly. As someone that loves LSU and LSU sports, this state's priorities are so screwed up!

I could care less tbh, I’m a big fan of LSU sports, but these athletes are making more in one yr than most residents will in 10. They can suck it up and pay their fair share, or since you care so much, why don’t you offer to pay the tax for them. Some folks are truly cucked by LSU sports.

They are "earning" a living just like anyone else. Tax them or stop taxing us. There is no other way.
Posted on 2/26/25 at 8:42 am to Pauvetibete
That’s ridiculous. Treat these athletes like adults or don’t.

I was shocked to see all of the adds on the LSU basketball goals last night…looked cheap af.
