Since Kelly is gone, can we tempt Xavier Atkins to come back and play MLB?
Probably the biggest transfer portal loss that LSU has ever had considering LSU's linebacker woes and Atkins having an All-American type year at Auburn.

The portal needs will not be clear until they find out current defectors!

Two QBs. Both mobile. Hopefully one a sophomore and the other junior so they aren’t one and done. Then restock the offense with some touch up on defense. Remember speed kills.

Whatever Lane wants is my answer.

In all seriousness, I’d like to bring back most of the OL. Starting with Curne, Solomon Thomas, Tyree, Ory and Echols. Hell, Braelin Moore too. I’m not even against the whipping boys at OL. With better coaching and strength coaches, I think that unit can be a strength of the team. I don’t think they lack talent.
That said, if we do hire Lane, I’m pretty confident that the offense will be ok even with a personnel overhaul.
There’s guys throughout the roster I’d like to keep. And I hope Whit stays.
One thing we definitely need is a new TE or 2.

There lies your problem in the LB room, slow arse LBs. Singleton, Braker, Charles and Moses should see more snaps

A lot will depend on who and how many players from LSU also enter the portal from a depth standpoint

The slow Weeks is a senior. The other two brothers are not slow by any means. Keys, on the other hand, could be faster.

One p**sy whipped, and the other too little. Braker, Singleton, Charles and Dillon are better options. Did ya'll not learn from the DJ kid? We got to get back to LSU defense.

Jimcoily is going to quickly become one of our favorite players. Happy that Perkins played well enough this season, but be mistaken not, Jimcoily is a stud!

Looking like QB Dylan Riola from Nebraska is expected to enter the portal.

I also don't think after our transfer WRs this year, we need to heavily invest there.
I appreciate your optimism, and I'd just add though that IF these WR's are good enough, then there definitely needs to be a focus on coaching.
They seem to be good at separating; all of the other fundamentals have seen some major blunders this year.

New HC is going to have his hands full, especially if he doesn't show up until after the portal period to retain & recruit new players.
This is huge. And I’m sure Austin Thomas and staff have already been working on it and will help the new coach and staff transition into the evaluation phase, even if AT and staff aren’t retained themselves. But there is a lot of young talent on the team that may just be 1 offseason of development (coaching and strength and conditioning) from being ready to contribute, if not start. I’m thinking LBs, DBs, and OL mostly.
OL, for example. I refuse to believe that we—and every other school nationally who offered these guys—just completely whiffed on evaluation out of high school. (Though I concede that’s a position that’s hard to project out of high school beyond the Will Campbells). I think we had a lot of young guys who were forced to play earlier than we were ready and they lacked the coaching development to help make up for the gaps they may have lacked physically. I don’t care how huge and athletic Curne or Williams are, they were going to be at disadvantage at 18-years-old going up against 21-year-old SEC DEs.
I think taking 3-4 OL in the portal like OP suggested, is just asking to be right back in the same situation the next year, and the next, and so on. At some point, you have to believe in your scouting evaluations and program development. And even though it’s easier to turn around a roster than ever before, and I would never just “punt” on a season in this day and age, realistically, we are probably not going to build a NC roster for ‘26. Maybe a really good one that can compete, kinda like Ole Miss this year, and can win any game they play, but likely won’t have the depth to reel off 3 straight against the best teams in the country to win the NC. (I think that’s one of the reasons Lane would leave if he does. He knows this Ole Miss team has a very slim chance of beating Notre Dame at home, then Georgia and Ohio State on neutral sites). At some point, you have to sacrifice some in the short term for the long-term interests of your program. ‘26 would be that year for us.
For example, I think Echols has shown enough at LG, and in high school at Center, that he could potentially be a very good SEC Center. Let’s say he gives us a 6 next year at center. We may could get a senior portal guy to give us a 7, but Echols leaves. But with that full year as a starter, he’d be ready to give us a 9 in ‘27. (Center is probably the wrong position for this hypothetical as it’s the most important on the line, but it makes the point). I think that was big mistake with this year’s OL. We had too many guys they were hoping could give them a 6 or 7 level play to begin with. And they weren’t even giving us that. Getting 6 or 7 from all 5 guys is a sure way to get your arse locked in the SEC. So that was a miscalculation. But an even bigger one was thinking we were getting that from Davis, who was about a 1 or 2.
And we had zero depth. Our very best case scenario this year wouldn’t have been good enough. And our worst case was much more disastrous than Kelly and co. predicted.
Anyway, a lot of short term vs long term evaluations to make, and the sooner the new staff gets in and starts working on that and figuring out who they want to retain and where they want to spend most of their NIL resources, the better. But I would lean towards spending more on retention and portal guys with more than 1 year of eligibility remaining in ‘26 than I likely would any season going forward.

We need a complete team turnover honestly
