He also played for Greg Marshall and this season in the southland Mcneese is still very good and has a pretty clear talent edge over SFA. If he’s able to win the regular season then the tourney in LC it’ll say a lot and somebody is going to come calling. Coaches know who this guy is and he’s gonna be a hot name if he gets to the dance.
He's someone teams will, and should, consider. But you have to look at things in context as well. That context is that while the record is really good, the schedule is really, really weak. Both in and out of the conference. The Southland, outside of SFA and McNeese, is not good. From that to the best and deepest conference in the country (by NET rating) is a BIG jump. Is one good season against a bad schedule, his only season ever as a HC, enough to make one believe he could have success in the SEC? That's a lot of faith to place on one season
If the choice is continuing to be one of the worst major-conf. programs in the country under MM or take a chance on a pretty unproven coach in Bareuer, then that choice is easy....give me Bareuer on a low contract. He couldn't be worse than MM. But I don't think he would be at the top of my mid-major candidates list simply because there is just too much uncertainty. Clearly a great resume doesn't mean everything (we are seeing that now). But you'd like to see maybe a little more than just one season in the Southland.

I know I’m piling on but a couple more things about this coach. His teams play hard nosed D, they absolutely crush the offensive glass, I think they’re around 13 ORPG right now and at one point we’re at 14.7 per. They shoot a lot of free throws and they put up about 25 three per at 36-37%. And he’s doing this without and significant portal pulls. He has a guard that came from UMass who’s his leading scorer, he has a kid from SLU and his only big 6-8, 200lbs from Northwestern whos his shot blocker and all the other players are either HS recruits or kids who were at non D1 schools prior so he’s not doing this with a talent advantage.

IMO, all (reasonable) options should be on the table. He's certainly one of them. Hopefully the AD has someone who knows basketball and the coaching landscape beyond just an internet search who can advise him. That's how LSU got Wade. Eddie Nunez (former Florida basketball player and GA, now Houston AD) was the one who pushed Alleva to hire Wade. Otherwise, Joe would have made some lazy internet search hire.
I like USF's coach as an option. Coached for Oats. Had success as a HC at Arkansas State before moving to USF this year. He has USF as the top team in the AAC in line for a tournament bid. He plays a very similar style to Oats. Fast with a lot of three point shots or drives to the rim. Unfortunately, he's from Western NY and a lot of Syracuse fans are high on him.

Greg Marshall? Is that the guy that coached Wichita State?
What about him?

Bumping this again.
Jai Lucas - Miami's head coach
Canes are 24-6 this season, after they were 15-17 last year. Lucas is a young coach (37) from Houston (understands the landscape of Texas and Gulf coast basketball), and was on staff at Duke for a few years before getting plucked away by Miami. We can compete with Miami in a bball coach bid. Played at Florida and Texas.
He was hired by Duke...a school that doesn't hire outside of their own. He's a stud. Let's get this guy back in the area where he belongs. The Wade interest seems forced and lazy and asinine.

Meanwhile reports are coming out that Kim English (HC at Providence) will be fired at season’s end. English has won 35% of his conference games in three seasons.
10 whole percentage points better than McMahon and will be out. Just another program that has standards.
Carry on.

what about the coach at SFA? up and comer can get him for a bargain!

Cronin isn’t going to leave UCLA lmao

Yea, I agree with that but like you said if we don’t go after a big fish, and I don’t think we will, he’s the type I’d look at.

I suspect there is a reason no one has hired him 6 years despite having a great resume.

For the same reasons as the SFA coach I'd be worried that he could be a one-hit-wonder given this is just his first season as a HC. Maybe he is the next great coach. Or maybe he is the next Lamont Paris. He had one good season at South Carolina. The best regular season in decades. He leveraged it into a big raise...and since has been as bad, if not worse, than McMahon. However, USC is stuck with him because of the contract extension.

The guy won at LSU, then immediately did it again at McNeese, and is doing it again at NC State. He would be the only coach on the market with a record AT LSU. It's not lazy. If someone told you that you could hire a coach with his resume that includes 5 years at you school it would be foolish not to consider that guy when everyone else would be an unknown as to how they would/might perform at LSU.

He’s not coaching anymore. After the media and ncaa running his name through the mud I think he’s done with it all. He won his lawsuit and he’s playing golf in South Carolina just enjoying life.

Cronin hates it over there. He could be lured away, he almost quit last year.

What’s wrong with Schertz?
He'll be making the first NCAAT of his career at Saint Louis this year. Should have made it in 2024 at Indiana State as well.
Travis Steele may also be on the move this year. Currently 30-0 at Miami(OH) & should be making his first NCAAT too

Both UCLA and Cronin seem to not get along, and he doesn't make that much money for a basketball coach.
Now, if he decides to leave UCLA or they decide to part he will probably be able to get a better Job than LSU currently is. Nor do I really think LSU is even thinking about it. that's why he's realistic but not really

I don't know if he truly hates it, or if that his just his personality. Also, he probably could have gotten the Kentucky job when everyone was turning it down. But it doesn't look like he was interested in it. If he did leave UCLA would he consider returning to Cincinnati (who may be firing their HC). It's is alum, hometown, the place where he had success, and its moved to a bigger conference (Big 12) since he left.

Good story. But he didn't have a very good run at Xavier. The program went from a perennial NCAA Tournament team, often as a high seed, to not making the tournament at all under him. It's never really rebounded since.

tHalcyon days of Brady chasing after DJ Augustine, Scottie Reynolds, Jai Lucas, and Donnell Beverley.
Posted on 3/5/26 at 12:37 pm to Alt26
Well the trouble didn’t really start until last season. If you know California HS basketball and you know Cronin’s style it’s oil and water, he’s a good coach but an awful fit for that program.

Scottie Reynolds
Was going to be the missing piece for the 2007 team to get the back to the Final Four. Instead, he went to Nova and Brady....Bradyed....taking LSU immediately back to the bottom of the SEC because he had no guard play. A year later Brady/LSU blow a 21 point 2nd half lead in Philadelphia against Nova and Reynolds. A month later Brady is gone.
I don't think its off base to say that Reynolds NOT choosing LSU changed the entire trajectory of the post Final Four years.
