I don't know what is in his contract. They very well may have a case.

No they don't. If anything this makes JR look better, the Raiders are so incompetent as an organization they don't even know how guaranteed contracts work.

Good for them. He was a miserable FAILURE!!!!
This has nothing to do with whether JR should receive his $$$. This is a ridiculous move that would ONLY have been made by ONE franchise in the NFL!!
JR did NOT void his contract so he should not have to repay anything.

IMO, any team that drafts a QB as the #1 overall pick is just asking for problems. DE, Oline are the way to go. It usually takes the good rookies several years to even be a top level QB, but you are paying millions to develop them. Oline and DE's have immediate impacts and without a good oline, your QB will suck.
When will teams learn that drafting a QB #1 when you have a shitty Oline is guaranteed failure. Has there ever been a young QB who has succeeded behind a crappy oline?
Back to the original point, this is the reason for JR's holdout in the 1st place. The Raiders wanted to make his contract performance based and take out injury/cut protection that every #1 pick has received for a long, long time. It was smart of JR to hold out even though he was bashed for it.
I doubt he is out of money, and I would imagine that some of those chains and "bling" are gifts from agents or companies. There is not any indication to believe he is even near out of money but I keep seeing that shite posted on here.
He needs to get his head out of his arse and get to work this off-season. He needs to show the work ethic he had at LSU under Jimbo if he wants to have any chance of succeeding or even finding another job

Last I checked, it was the Raiders who cut Russell. Russell didn't walk out on his contract.
Russell doesn't owe a thing to the Raiders.
He was never suspended for drugs, behavioral problems or brought any kind of shame to the Raiders other than not being a good quarterback.
Lots of people fail to be one of only 32 starting NFL QB's on earth. All teams take risks on those who may have the quality to be among the 32.
This is not a Todd Marinovich/Tony Mandarich-style flameout.
Russell should not be penalized beyond losing his job for not being a very good NFL quarterback.

This is even worse than players who hold out for new contracts, this would be like a player holding out saying "Pay me money right now for the extra work I did last year."
You paid the man a salary/bonus. You fired the man for not performing well. End of story. You can't recoop money for someone you fire who didn't violate their contract.

I love watching the Raiders unravel year after year. It's pure comedy and a soap opera that never ends.

Lack of good coaching aside, JR is a total embarrassment to LSU- so much potential yet he absolutely showed no desire to improve. Instead, he was busy finding ways to create his own turnovers. I would like to give JR the benefit of the doubt, but I would be surprised if any other NFL does not agree with me and decides to give him another shot.

Exactly.... Raiders benched then cut JR. Sucks to be them but they owe JR every cent of guaranteed money. Live large JR. Live large my friend.

Showing up for camp multiple times 40-50 lbs over his expected playing weight isn't a behavioral issue? Not putting in the time and effort to improve? Poster child of why proven vets should get paid way more than supposed great college players with unlimited "upside" who quickly turn into expensive busts. Dude will be dead broke by 30 if not sooner.

So, basically Ocean's 2 needs to be created about JR and hsi agent and the Raiders?

The "crossed my fingers" contract defense, while novel, may get traction in the Ninth Circuit.
